In this song the singer is paying respect to his influences and at the same time he’s introducing himself and their style of music. Could be the first metal album ever made and Speed King is about the pace of their music. Not many bands really played that fast back then.

Yeh this doesn’t stand up to micro-analysis. The world is under notice it’s now in a different era and the album is a forty minute whole.

Speed King was the name of the Ian Paice's drum peddle. Just like Highway Star, Gillian would sometimes take something as simple as an object, and turn it into a song. Peace

Speed King" developed from a bass riff written by Glover at Hanwell, in an attempt to emulate Jimi Hendrix's "Fire".[30] Gillan wrote the lyrics by taking phrases of old rock 'n' roll songs by Little Richard.[31] It was originally known as "Kneel and Pray" and developed as a live piece for several months before recording. The first studio take of the song featured Lord playing piano instead of organ, which was later released as a B-side in Holland. The final take used on the album was recorded in January 1970; it opens with an untitled instrumental known as "Woffle", recorded in November 1969.[

Living in the Midwest in the US, around 1973 or so, I knew this English kid who went to the same junior high school. He said, "You've gotta listen to some Deep Puuhple." He kindly lent me the UK versions of three Mark II albums, so my first experience of Speed King was with the piano intro -- better than the US version I wound up buying soon thereafter.

A speed king is someone getting from one place to another really fast that’s in the words of the singer Ian gillan.. The song is a homage to early rock and roll..it is described on the album in rock as of a few roots replanted

These shows were back in the early 70's at TV studio's the audience were used to watching groups like the Carpenters and the Bee Gees etc when you went to the TV studio to be part of the audience you were never really sure who was going to preform hence when one of the new rock outfits came on most had never heard of them before no internet ,MTV etc the audience were more in shock than anything else

The visuals for this video were taken from Deep Purple's previous album, an experimental piece called 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra'. Its one public performance was recorded and filmed with the London Philharmonic at Royal Albert Hall. The subdued audience members are not Deep Purple fans, they are subscribed London Philharmonic fans who are being exposed to something entirely outside their experience. They are watching carefully, trying to make (classical) musical sense of what they're seeing.

Nope, this isn't the Concerto For Group And Orchestra video. It's a 1970 concert in a UK TV channel called Granada TV. It's called "Deep Purple - Doing Their Thing". They played Speed King, Child In Time, Wring That Neck and Mandrake Root

Thanks for reacting, now you have Burn left (with another singer Dave Coverdale). You should also do Fireball (with Ian on vocals) and then something totally different, Focus and Hocus Pocus the Midnight Special version from 1973...you'll love that too !!

Actually, that build you describe is very common in metal, but also extremely common in classical music. In fact, a common thread amongst metalheads is an appreciation for classical music - this is likely due to the similar way in which the two genres are composed and structured. 💜

Yup, I can see it! I am a big fan of classical, I really like EDM, and I'm obviously becoming a huge fan of metal. The structure of the songs probably has a lot to do with it as I love the change ups and progressions.

The video has nothing to do with the track you are listening to . . it's a completely different song and was filmed in a TV studio where the audience were told to be quiet so they didn't interfere with the recording. You would have been better just listening to the audio.
