True hip hop - the stuff that ignited the unprecedented global expansion of the culture & artform in the 90's...will always be in the Underground. There are a few emcees here and there that are able to bring it, but for the most part...its been bastardized. This is no coincidence-it's by the design of the Main Stream Media. The elites can't just shut down rap music-it would simply amplify the very thing that people from every corner of the planet relate to the music's message of resisting and rising up from oppression, tyranny and injustice. Silencing the genre would feed into that narrative, so they've come up with another way to bury the lyrics; force rap music back to where it came from. The Main Stream Media has successfully muffled hip hop's resonating voice through the unintelligible, non-freestyle, three-word bar "rappers" such as Migos, Lil Pump, Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Kodak Black, 21 Savage, Designer, Young Thug, etc...The MSM has uses these girl jeans wearing impostors to emasculate hip hop's male identity and image. 360 deals are empowering & encouraging talentless parasites to continue producing Atypical sounding songs that the MSM's radio affiliates push as rap music. This is a manufactured, false generation, deliberately meant to appear unsophisticated, underwhelming and odd to the point that the real hip hop industry has virtually condemned them.

Accordin' to Jordan I would rather the artists aren't constrained by subgenres.
@accordintojordan42505 жыл бұрын
How exactly would that “constrain” them?
@PeteS_19945 жыл бұрын
@@accordintojordan4250 Because fans may learn of the subgenres then expect certain sounds, styles of mix from certain artists and in return artists may find it easier to constrain their selves or may learn music production and rap in a more constrained way, expecting certain results rather than just playing with sound. I think there is a balance between categorising sub genres and making a genre open to a massive vairety of sound. You see more experimentation with the latter, but categorisation makes it easier for the listener to find what they want.
@accordintojordan42505 жыл бұрын
Dude, that’s already how things are right now. You think of Juice Wrld, and you expect that sad and emotional vibe, you think of Lil Tecca, and you expect that upbeat catchy shit. Sub-genres would just help us separate different types of rappers. The fact that Eminem and Lil Mosey can be classified as the same type of musician fucking hurts my brain. And that’s not a diss to either of them, it’s just that they’re music sounds nothing alike. This is why subgenres should be a thing

Hip hop is a culture and at the same time a story like hip hop is actually an underground culture because in addition to rap, hip hop itself has always been a political aspect to name poverty and criticize the system, which is why there was a certain structure that hip hop with graffiti or with breakdancing associated because that was the origin. Nowadays it is almost no longer possible to criticize the system or to show off weapons or to show off what drugs you take. That destroys the culture itself and people increasingly associate what the beat is and isn't what you want to express and if you look at how other countries rap, it's more anti-social than political problems. And because of this anti-social rapping, rap wasn't one of my favorite genres when it comes to drugs or weapons just not good anymore

This is a cool topic for discussion, imo Rap has quite a few sub genres but none of them are really applied. The only ones that are used are ones that have slight dismissiveness to them “mumble rap” “sounds cloud rapper” “old school”. Lots of these terms just flair up peoples preconceptions on artists/music. It would be great to get some useful, non disparaging sub-genres in rotation. I think emo rap is a useful term for people like Juice Wrld, XXX, lil Tracey etc, because they are heavily influenced by emo culture and the sounds of those 2000’s bands. This also shows in their work and it’s a useful sub genre for us to use to understand and explain these artist 👌

J Cole and Kendrick make soft, singy songy music (J Cole especially). Kendrick is a little more 'weird' in presentation but his whole sound is designed to be hot with casuals.

Adding sub genres to rock killed rock. Not saying its good or bad but once you have large subgenres it gets more broken down. I saw a video once saying that the future is “mood” playlists. Not sure if I believe it but i know myself personally I categorize music myself by “moods”

In the histoty of HipHop. None of the Subgenres were really named by artists themselves. For instance, Ice Cube said that NWA reffered to it as "reality rap", but the media coined it as gangsta rap. No rapper called it mumble rap, but somehow, that is the official name.

This is a good topic Remember when hip hop and rap where once classified as separate genres hip hop at that time was more jazz driven like #diggableplanets #blacksheep yes even the team LOD #keithmurray #enigma was #hiphop rap was everything else. As the music CONTINUED to evolve the terms fused together. The beauty and power of rap is that it cannot be categorized and therefore trying to create sub genres and agreeing to defining them the force of hip hop will not be contained
@georgebad42295 жыл бұрын
Ok what about cloud rap, mumble rap, grime, lofi hip hop, trap rap, new jack swing, old school, country-rap, country- trap. West coast, east coast, southern rappers are all well defined sounds. Glitch rap, nu-metal, scream rap noise rap are all very prevalent and defined rap Genres.

Term pop itself isn't necessary a specific genre, more a transcendent term where a popular song or element transcends its typical enviorment.... also Pop is short for Popular, as in popular music... popular music technically is not genre specific, although many over the years have tried to label it that way, it changes over time by the demand of what the audience of that particular time dictates...

We live in the information/internet age where you consume way more music now. That means people are naturally exposed to more music (of different styles, Candace, sound,etc). As a result, we have is a mishmash of artist going from one style to style, making it pointless to categorize all of them. And this is not just a hiphop thing, it's all over the music. Personally, I call everyone that isn't rapping a hiphop artist.

I think it's good in a way that it doesn't have so many subgenres. I listen to an EDM song and people comment and argue over which genre it or point out how something is a new genre for just sounding a bit different.

That's an absolutely _terrible_ definition of "rapper". For one thing, plenty of singers are primarily known for their lyrical abilities (Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and David Bowie all come to mind, just going off some of my favourites) - I think the definition should have more to do with the audience you're going for and the genre you're working in. Ogre, the singer of the 80s electro-industrial group Skinny Puppy - not only is he well known for his lyricism, but he often uses a vocal style that it's more rhythmic "spoken word" than melodic singing - But I doubt anyone here would call him a rapper....

What happens if you’re a spoken word poet and some beat maker throws an instrumental over/under your words? The same as when a singer from genre a covers a song word-for-word that was performed by a singer from genre q. (Kid Cudi does “You Need to Calm Down” over an electric sitar). Pointless endeavor that I’d love to see make its way into the global lexicon.
@TheLokiBiz5 жыл бұрын
Yeah...Defining "rapper" by a focus on lyricism is seriously short sighted (and shows he probably doesn't listen to much outside of hip hop). For one thing, plenty of singers are primarily known for their lyrical abilities (Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and David Bowie all come to mind, just going off some of my favourites) - I think the definition should have more to do with the audience you're going for and the genre you're working in. Post Malone said that he isn't a rapper, he just happens to rap. Also, there's so much rappers that are doing their own things, that sometimes other rappers happen to be doing the same, which makes them feel obligated to make music that feels more like their genre.

Johnny Cash was a Rockstar. The Weeknd and Juice Wrld will go down in history as Rockstars. Hugh Hefner was a Rockstar. Rockstar has long since moved on from its original self explanatory definition and has been used to describe anyone who lives a certian lifestyle. Plenty of fans, viewed as very cool for their personality, living in the road in a new city with a new girl every night, drinking/ using/ partying, etc.

I like Post Malone, but a rapper he is not. He's a POP SINGER. He literally used the hip-hop platform as a springboard into the spotlight. He works with rappers, yes, but he himself has said he doesn't like hip-hop.
@hkjsdghhga5 жыл бұрын
Imo rap doesn't need specific genres, we already use labels for different kinds of rap music, but still not that specific as in rock for example. I think it should stay like that, because that's one of the things I like about the genre. I think this would just kind of split up the rap community into different groups which could somehow generate some kind of negative thinking towards each other, which is unfortunately already present (i.g. oldheads). I think this holds us together as a whole and doesn't break us up into separate groups.

In the beginning of rap rappers wanted to be rockstars. The furious 5 wore wigs & all that! They were pop! Now that we’ve circled around the culture; I think it’s time artists start properly labeling their rap sub genres when they release records. This is one way to fix. Or just fucking call it alternative rap lol. I’ve been using it.

Its not that difficult all the guys you name on her are rappers...most of them just use a more melodic/pop delivery...such as Nelly, bone, outkast ect which we all consider rappers Plus sonically they all rap/use melodies over hip hop production...the music is the main indicator of your genre

Calling it “mumble raps” isn’t that accurate and calling it “new wave rap” brought another issue. I mean it can’t be the new wave forever
@TheFallenXL5 жыл бұрын
New wave is actually a genre from the 80s. There's also NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) also from the 80s. We could call it "post-rap" but it doesn't make sense since it's still a very relevant genre. IDK man. I'm not really into separating music into 100000 subgenres. I mean, sure, it's necessary for some music, not for rap.
