I'm an Okinawa stylist but I admire the beauty and power of Shotokan. Hotton Sensei seems to me to be one of the finest technicians and with the deepest understanding of karate's nuances. An absolute pleasure to watch him.

Not sure you can give shotokan all the credit of his biomechanics skill. He merged his aikido and karate together and what he teaches now is the end result of his personal understanding of karate. It truly is beautiful to witness even in 1-8 minute clips.

That's something that has been perplexing me, is how to correctly move my hip in these basic katas. Like if move hip same direction as im blocking or opposite direction of my block. Sounds like you're saying pull your hip back as you block. Where it gets tricky in my style is 3-5, we do an outside block, then rising block after the downblock. That's where the hip gets really complicated for me. I asked my sensei about loading the hip for these basic katas because his son does. He showed me something else for generating more force and brushed oft the hip in these katas. As they're white and yellow belt katas in our style. Though being the obsessed perfectionist that I am. I just can't get it off my mind. 😅

When you start using the power of the hara, hip rotation comes automatically and by itself. Try using the power of the abdomens in every technique and they will take charge of the hips. We don't learn how to rotate our hips. We rather learn how to feel the power coming out of the hara (the abdomens) in every technique...Oss.

Raouf Mahjoub - no, you are incorrect regarding both your posts. It is not 'natural' to use your hips effectively and with full potential, it is something to be learned and developed. Even more practice is required to reduce the 'exageration' of hip movement and still produce effective power eg. Sanchin.

@Dan Iacobescuand through the glutes and foot turnout via the upper quadriceps and a tilt from the lower back. Hip rotation requires differrent muscles for each degree of movement and masterey of both muscles in each antagonisgic pair is important for effective chambering and retraction. This means to effectively use "the power of the hips" which, yes by themselves are not a bone, its not enough to just focus on the abdominal component or any one involved muscle group but to practice the movement itself. Doing this in an exaggerated fashion builds the mind muscle connection and gets the nerves themselves more accustomed to maximal synchronised firing of ALL the constituent muscles to good hip rotation. This being specifically good hip rotation because at the further extent of your range of motion you have to incorporate and then relax more muscles instead of relying on the strongest one youd naturally lean on. This prevents your smaller hip rotations in an actual strike from being hampered by "dragging" your legs behind them instead of driving unilaterally and in a more coordinated way than even if you trained every muscle necessary in isolation. But take what i say with a pinch of salt i'm inexperienced and my hip rotation isnt stellar but im working on it. TL;DR abs aint enough for hip rotation no matter how fast you get it, train rotating the hip with everything as wide as you can and tighten it up to apply it

that is very right. Im in no position to criticise but im still saddened when i see practicioners move in a way thay seems to be an inability to exert the sheer explosive power to accelerate their own core weight with the right timing to have it coincide with their (relatively) lighter limbs in the right way

@Dan Iacobescu i notice it comes so naturally to some, usually athletic types and those coming from other disciplines but especially wrestlers, rugby players and calisthenic gymnasts. Maybe looking at commonalities of their training might shed some light on picking up and mastering the motion.

El pie de atrás casi no lo gira hacia el lado del bloqueo, lo que impide un buen giro de cadera para un segundo movimiento de Yako zuky.

Hip rotation is a martial arts myth...it's not a technique that we have to learn. It's a natural body movement when you try to hit hard (eg: oi tsuki) especially from a stand still position (ie without adding the weight of the body as we do when we move forward in zenktsu stance for example...You just try to hit hard and hip rotation comes out naturally and unintentionally...
@TheAce7366 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Mostly. The hips will be rotated by violent extension because they are pulled by the trunk
@TheAce7366 жыл бұрын
That isnt using all the muscles anchored to the hips (of which there are very many) to drive independent rotation. This rotation can be combined with trunk rotation for more power but that shouldnt be confused for the trunk dragging the hip behind it when it moves in a wide strike.

Most people would only twist at the shoulders and maybe lean forward. If your aren't coordinated or familiar with your body, nothing will happen Even boxers have to learn proper hip rotation and a lot of beginner boxers are only capable of pushing hard because it's mostly weight and upper body. If it were that easy everyone should have knockout power after 2min of training. And even if you do use the hips naturally because you're one of those, it's more likely to be a swivel/hinge motion. Like a haymaker. There's multiple ways to use the hips and legs for power. At best our natural power comes from momentum and swinging. Hip rotation power is not always based solely on those concepts.

Modern Witchery wouldn't manually turning the hip focus more on driving your muscular strength? I personally shift my weight which makes my hip move because the weight won't move otherwise and I get really good power out of it. When I force the hip to turn without focusing on weight, and solely for the hip turn, my moves turn more into pushes. Unless you swing the hip instead, but for me personally shifting the weight works better.
@TheAce7365 жыл бұрын
@@BlueFang714for full power (and EXTREME commitment) youre supposed to use the whole prosterior chain to sort of whip the hips round instead of a twisting drive, WHILE shifting the weight forward so your weight is stacked diagonally above and below the rotating hips and rolling shoulder.
