Nice video as usual Maz. That XTC cover is so Andy Partridge! I finally got my collection in Discogs, nice that you can search it then for stuff like this. I've always liked the In Through the Out Door cover although all the different bar scene veiw versions must drive Led Zep completists crazy!

Thanks for the recommendation. Just got a copy. A pig floating over a London power plant. And it gets out of hand! I love album cover art. Great book.

John Edginton just posted a 2014 Genesis interview, "Genesis Reunion Pt4." They discuss working with Hipgnosis on their album covers near the end of the recording.

Love that Atom Heart Mother cover. Another TG/Hipgnosis link - apparently it's Genesis P-Orridge & Cosey Fanni Tutti on the cover of UFO's 'Force It'

Great book! I bought my copy the first day of the 'Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains' exhibition at the V&A, and it was signed inside by Nick Mason. He had been there the day before at the preview and this was a left-over. There were 3 copies of that one, as well as his book 'Inside Out' which I picked up as well, signed. They were at the back corner of the gift shop and easy to miss.

Hipgnosis were heroes of mine. I have The Album Cover Album & have read their early bio, "Walk Away Rene." The Strawbs' "Deadlines" is a particular favorite, recently reissued as an 8" box by Esoteric.

I never knew about that book, but that is awesome. I dont know if it's something they've ever done, or maybe I'm not aware of. But I've always wondered if they ever sold posters of the album cover artwork. Sure I know you can get some now, but I mean even back then. Since they were into that sort of thing. Cant see it being many. Like say they only 1000 of whatever cover, but it could even be on that oversize UK poster size. Like those big subway ad sized ones. Imagine a life sized poster of Atom Heart Mother. Thatd be kinda hilarious to have. I've seen silk flags of them, but they just dont quite cut it. It's just not big enough.
@mazzysmusic2 жыл бұрын
Posters were mostly send to record stores for promotion. I used to have tons of them rolled up.

The most 'ordinary' of their covers must be the portrait cover of Aussie Gary Shearston from the early 1970's.

I admit it, I bought an LP back in the day strictly for the Hipgnosis cover... Quatermass, had never heard of them before or since, listened to it once. But the cover! Black & white, POV standing between two towering office buildings, looking straight up...and the pterodactyls are descending...

That looks like a great book on the Hipgnosis story. I didn't know that T-Rex album was Hipgnosis too. Venus and Mars is a classic. Thanks for fine showing.

The inside of the 10cc How Dare You album was quite prescient. It features a crowded party in which everybody is talking on the telephone.

In the end, didn't Floyd paste the pig onto a photo? The best pix of the pig had a dull sky behind the power station so they took a pic with dramatic sky then pasted the pic onto to it.
@mazzysmusic2 жыл бұрын
I think they retouched it in for the final cover image
@vinylarchaeologist Жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. The final image was a composite: sky from first day, pig from second day. Even back then there was no need to actually fly the pig for the cover unless you count the publicity stunt and the myriad of other behind-the-scenes photos and film material. I mean talk about 1970s rock-star hubris, right?

Hipgnosis had a HUGE influence on me!! I think what fascinated me the most as time when on was the fact that a lot of their photos that looked unreal were, in fact, real...actual in camera happenings with very little special effects added later. Covers like Elegy by the Nice, for instance. I love that book on the complete Hipgnosis...It includes everything, even the not so great album covers that they did...I remember the first book I bought of theirs was Walk Away Rene. I used it so much that it is literally in shreds. (Sidebar note: I read that they never got quite the sky that they wanted for the pig shot on Animals so they ended up stripping the pig in anyway...Oh well, they gave it a try anyway).... Great video on a group of great artists...You should do a video on the work of Pacific Eye and Ear (I referred to them as the Hipgnosis of America) and the wonderful art of Drew Struzan.
@patbarr13512 жыл бұрын
I remember reading the "Animals" story. The band were the ones who insisted on an actual inflated pig balloon. Typical '70's rock star excess?

I live in Cambridgeshire and accidentally found a Storm Thorgerson art exhibition in Ely ( where the Division Bell artwork was photographed):, it was only a small , bijou exhibition run by a local arts company and they persuaded the estate of Storm to show some of his original works there , very little publicity involved…. A strange affair. You like your art books so look up a book called “ The Raging Storm” The Art Graphics of StormStudios , they had a few of them left when I went there , some of which were signed and dated ( 2012) so I picked up a signed edition for £50 , which wasn’t too bad as the original price was £35 anyway and even more of a bargain considering he had already been dead for a few years anyway…….look it up, I think you’ll enjoy it

Lulubelle! LOL. I love the stories behind some of these famous covers like Atom Heart Mother. Storm was an artistic genius, but I will always have a problem with Meddle. One of my favorite Pink Floyd albums, but one of the worst covers ever. Storm really regrets that one too. I wish the artwork did a good job of representing the music on that one.
@musicforfun53502 жыл бұрын
I'll take the cover of Meddle over that of Atom Heart Mother any day. Same for the music on those albums too.

Hipgnosis made a great album cover for the band Yes- " Going For The One", but the next cover they designed for the band was terrible " Tormato" . It is indescribably bad. Yes said NO ! and threw tomatos at it, but it was still used.
