DOOM said that if the venue doesn't put the right amount of money on the table, he sends an imposter. When asked "don't you think that's wrong?" DOOM replied "I'm the super villain. Lemme put it like this.. my best friend til 2012 (RIP) introduced me to real shit like Wu-Tang, Tribe, Nas, pretty much all my heroes growing up. Around the 1999 era Q-Tip was on some shit sayin hip hop was dead. Tip was my boy’s greatest of all time, so naturally he felt disenchanted. Call it like 2005, I had to drag him to a little venue where Talib Kweli was playin. Kweli opened and Doom, who my boy had never heard of, closed that show. By the time it was over, he was revitalized and inspired by what hip hop could still be. I was able to introduce him to all the underground shit of that era just like he did for me when we were kids. All on the strength of that one live Doom performance. This name and the mask on my profile is dedicated to that moment with my boy.

Andrew Thomas duh, justin hunte is the goat of hip hop breakdowns, murs is a very worthy apprentice... love the hip hop dx breakdowns, the future should have college courses like such, because it's actually translatable to a job in music, knowing your past is the only way to pave a future, most college courses don't actually teach a career skill necessarily, that's why so many college grads are in massive debt and working very modest jobs despite having a degree that they worked hard for, the American dream isn't black and white anymore, you can't just go to college and have a silver spoon handed to you when your done, you need actual skills that stand you above the competition, which is exactly why we need to change the format of college courses starting with high school preparing kids for college and the wrok force much earlier, or else school is just a business scam like everything else has become like marriage 😜...

Yo. Thanks, Justin, for the DEHH shoutout! We really appreciate it, bro! But I just wanna clear up a few things. While I was at the show and was highly pissed off, I wasn't one of the people who trashed anything. I simply left and complained about it on MySpace. Haha! But as far as if it's hypocritical to get mad that he does this, I totally get your point. That's an interesting take...him being a villain and us getting angry at him doing what a villain does. But, if this is all a part of the character, people are supposed to get angry at the acts of a villain. So we're totally within our right to get pissed. Outside of it being a part of the character, it's bullshit. Yes, his idea of marketing the music as opposed to the person is deep and dope as hell...but it doesn't excuse him from taking advantage of his fans. We are not a part of the marketing machine who wants to exploit people. We want to celebrate them. And we like to see him make his point...but not at the expense of our own common sense. And, yes, I would definitely pay to see him play without a mask. I'm gonna do a response video to this for anyone who gives a shit. But thanks, again, Justin and Hip Hop DX!

Do you think it's that DOOM is unable to be separated from his work? A lot of DOOM's sickest verses are rather personal, as we see with a lot of rappers, and while he does take on a lot of the characters, he still seems to bring these characters from personal levels. Take other Superhero Musicians, The Aquabats. Their content is nowhere near as personal as DOOM's. In fact, you can say that the lyrical content seems to be satirical at the best. This allows for The MC Bat Commander to be a completely other person (although I doubt the MC Bat Commander will ever be someone else), or even allow for various lineup and sound changes. If you're into the Auqabats, you'd notice that they've taken on a very different sound since their "Fury of The Aquabats" album. DOOM, however, is unable to really distance himself from the act. In fact, I think that his act will still have his beliefs from it. For example, whenever we look at Mike Myers of SNL fame, we tie him to his characters, rather than let his characters be truly independent of Myers. On the other hand, Power Rangers and other Japanese Heroes have changed in cast to the point where there are multiple actors/artists that make up that one idea of what a Power Ranger or Kamen Rider is. DOOM can't necessarily afford that because since Operation Doomsday, it has been his and his alone. Nobody can spit Potholderz (my favorite DOOM song), or even Accordion like DOOM can. I don't think it's just the fans being hypocritical, but DOOM himself not realizing that he has made his music, characters and act something that can't be replicated by DOOMbots, and that confusion itself has led to a confusion as to why DOOMbots exist. Of course, that's how I feel. Sometimes, it's hard to separate the artist from the art because of the fact that the artist has played a stupidly major role in the art. Sometimes, the art is bigger than the artist's influence on it and at that point can the artist pass it off to someone else.

Exactly. DOOM's music is very intriguing because he presents his music as if it's someone else rapping but you can tell the songs are all about his life, some of his notable experiences, the lessons he's learned. No one could possibly imitate DOOM's music, so when he sends fakes to his concerts, it'll just feel so out of place that the shit the fans did almost seems justified. Just reiterating your point.

You know the longer you listen to DOOM you notice how he almost narrarates his own story like some comic book with the vintage audio and the way he speaks and delivers. For some reason the tongues of old have way more mental impact that the way we speak today. It's like he believes he's an actual Super Villian but the more you listen to him the more YOU start to actually believe he's a Super Villian he paints this image of himself in your head. Like he's in his secret hideout plotting on destroying the rap game. And the songs are stories and tales of his Mad Villainy.

MF Doom's character is based on the famous Marvel supervillain Dr. Doom who actually had Doombots. The Doombots are robots that are modeled after their creator Doctor Doom. They are exact replicas of the real Doctor Doom and were created to replace Doctor Doom in certain situations and were made with an advanced A.I. program which causes them to believe each is the real Doctor Doom. It's hilarious and almost poetic that even in outraging his own fanbase, Doom still manages to stay in character.

It really is an insane concept to me. The entire idea behind Doom is he is the Mad Villain. He has never been presented as anything but. The entire idea behind the mask is to kill the man. People like to say they like him because of this and he is so underground and he's not corporate, but then the second the mad villain is...well himself, people get up in arms. This shit is art. The people who don't get it and complain about it too are just part of the show. They think they get it, but they don't, so the vitriol comes, and the hate piles on for Doom, but then Doom is the villain and are you supposed to love and trust the villain in the first place?

DMitsuki Nailed it. It's honestly incredible, an example of art so pure that it's genius can only be recognized by the genuine, unaltered perceptions of it's audience. Artwork that demands the unfiltered honesty of the observer, that challenges our true intent and emotions. I feel lucky to be able to appreciate it but a bit sad that it's purity and genius actually kinda relies on it never being widely recognized and appreciated.

"Let me watch" was my introduction to Vik Vaughn, and that led me to discover DOOM. Smooth and rad beat I've never heard something like. Also, That was at the same time that I discover "Bluffin" by Quasimoto and was fully in love with it. So imagine my surprise when I later came to realize they both made something together, and it was legendary. Hip-hop sure has been a wild ride for me these last 2 years I started to listen to it all day and I love all what it has to offer.

I’ll quote what DOOM has said for years, “He’s the super villain. You’re not supposed to love him”
