Great job in tackling a difficult topic to tackle. I took a course on the Arab-Israeli Conflict. My instructor was from Israel, and his best friend was from Palestine, who came in and taught a couple weeks. It was one of the best classes I ever took. Something that many people don't realize is that for thousands of years before the 20th century Arabs and Jews lived peacefully side by side, even fighting together in wars to defend their land.

Jews and Christians were/are dihmnis is Islam controlled countries. That means that they are second class citizens. They have to pay a yearly ransom (Jizzha) in order to be allowed to live. Because in Islam countries no other religion other than Islam is allowed. Churches have no bells and Jews aren't allowed to blow the shofar. How is that for peacefully side by side. In Israel all religions are protected, and five times a day you will hear the call for prayer in Arab towns, you will hear churchbells chime in Yaffo, and Jerusalem. The reason that there were so many Arabs in Israel, is that they poured into the country from neighboring countries as Jews started migrating to Israel. Before that (like 1850) the country was empty of people as Mark Twain writes...

@@jaronbynow, slow it down a little bit .... what you say is comparable to a barely baked cake... too much misconception and generalisations that never works...aka you don't understand anything you said ... *It's jizyah, it's not a ransom, it a tax that dhimmi (literally : means, under (responsibility to/) protection in Arabic, but it's generally not used, but instead we use the people of the "Book" as mentioned in Quran).Muslims pay also taxes called Zakat, and there are Zakat for each specific properties such Zakat of gold, of livestock, one for the holy Ramadan based on annual revenue cuts (2.5%), other taxes can also be imposed it depend on the rule... now all of these taxe are replaced over time by different taxes ,basically everyone pays taxes, it's just names that differs...

While you were right on a lot of things, You were wrong for saying Zionism was religious. Most of the Zionists, at least in the beggining were atheists. Religious Jews usually believed that Jews are not allowed to take their national fate into their own hands until the Messiah comes.

Theodor Herzl was an atheist. He proposed the Zionist movement because of the anti-semitism Jews had been facing for centuries after their exile. The Jewish diaspora forced Jews to try and assimilate within Europe, but they were constantly persecuted and marginalized to live in the ghettos. Herz recognized this and realized that culture integration would never work as it never had for centuries for Jews, and that the only resolution would be an official Jewish state of Israel, back in their original homeland. It was a sociopolitical move, rather than a religious one, but as time progressed and Herlz died, the movement carried on and added elements of religious reasons to it. But it wasn't the initial ideas of Herlz.

Is it a coincidence they have been exiled from endless countries? The cries of antisemitism are used as a manipulating tactic, nothing more. The juice are evil and will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. See the USS Liberty attack in which they slaughtered a ship full of supposed allies. Then there is the mossäd motto - by means of deception thou shalt wage war.

People need to get off their soapboxes, calm down a bit and look at this conflict without letting emotions take control. Calling Israel an illegitimate state (what contry isn't built of illegitimate conquests?) isn't helping the problem. Likewise, dismissing the Palestinian claim outright also accomplishes nothing. We need to accept that nothing is going to convince these people to give up their claim, and that the only way to live together is for both sides to accept their wrongdoings and try to work together to prosper.

Leon Pollak ummm okay? you must be aware of some rule that I'm not. I didn't realise that I "MUST do jihad and kill infidels". Guess that means I should just start popping caps in peps skull. Being more serious now, I jihad all the time, usually with my attention span but at no point have I ever been required to kill my friends or family because they're not of the same religion as I am. I'm sure you know this but for those that don't: Jihad doesn't meant "holy war" or "kill all non Muslims". It means to struggle. Yes that can mean in times of war as well but the main point of that word is that its suppose to be applied to yourself, the whole "bettering" yourself melarky.

But, to my great pity, this does not make the Islamic religion to be peaceful and tolerant. I am sure you know all the fact and points in Koran making it hateful intolerant book. And making its followers militants brutal hateful killers of everything not complaining its principles. Starting from beheading of English drummer and Syrian priest and till yesterdays killing of 8000 Ezids in Mousul region. We can argue till the end of the days about what Jihad word means, but we are not able to hide the facts...:-(

Really amazing analysis of the situation! I do have one note, around 5:30 you mentioned that in the early 20th century it was mostly traditional, religious Jews that were going there, however, that is not the case. In that time, the orthodox(traditional) movement did not believe in Zionism and believed that Jews had to wait for their messiah or for a message from God to return back to the land. After WW2, sentiment in religious communities changes and Zionism became more prominent. However, the original Zionist movement was a largely secular and more cultural Jewish movement, as embodied by Herzl. Feel free to let me know if you believe I misstated something, but that is my understanding of what occurred

I hat to pause to comment on your "OUTs" captioning around 10:15 in the vid. I've watched few of your other videos and have subscribed, English is my second language but I've have been state side long enough to pick up on the smallest things. When I first moved to states back in 1999 I lived in Georgia and that's where I learned English. I live in the southwest currently and have lived in Chicagofor some time, so I got to learn all the different accents across this great country. In case you're wandering, I'm from Bosnia and I moved here after the fallout and the war in Ex-Yugoslavia. I, very much, enjoy your videos and being that you cover a lot of history, maybe, you could do a video on the Balkan, and the colorful history that part of Europe has since the beginning of time. I bet it would take more than one video, but you seem very capable of condensing the very basics into a nice, understandable and fun to watch videos. I hope you read this and I get to see a video on my suggestion. I'll be honest with you, I would also learn from it because I left Bosnia at age of 14 (just finished 7th grade). It was the worst time in my life, I haven't learned my native language grammer fully and when I came here and continued, or should I say repeated 7th grade here at my mom's request in hopes that it would help me learn a little more of English and other subjects as well. Now, I'm in my early 30's and while I can speak English I know it's not perfect and I usually don't write this much in fear of making a lot of grammatical mistakes. The only reason I went this far is because I got to explain myself so people can understand why I wrote, what I wrote, the way I did. Once again, I really find your channel educational and especially for someone like me who has missed the basic education in the American educational system and had to learn and catch up quick, I get to learn from people like you a lot about the things that you learn only by being born and raised in a country. I watched your videos on political differences between left and right, liberal and conservative and so on. Thanks again, and I hope, if you decide to do research on what I suggested, that you find it interesting enough to do a video on it. Best regards, Nedad.

And no, I am not an arab or german or nazi or whatever. I just like the truth.

***** Yes, I do. Just speak to Israeli Muslims - most of them pray for Israel to withstand the pressure and keep developing. Not many of them are ready to speak very loud without a significant reason, because they may be blamed as traitors by PLO's fighters. But at the critical moments they speak very loud...:) For example, when A.Liberman suggested to exchange heavily populated Jewish areas in Judea and Samaria for the heavily populated by Arabs Israeli regions - there was terrific violence and demonstrations in these regions, where they shouted - "Jews are traitors", "we are devoted citizens of Israel", etc... Not to say that such Muslims of Israel as Druze and Bedouins serve in their thousands voluntary in the IDF and are killed in fights for Israel.

PLEASE ignore those who for whatever reason clearly missed the fact that you have acknowledged in the beginning of this video that this is a controversial topic and that you would do your best to stay neutral and present the information. It was informative and you presented the facts for both sides. In the end it is what it is. PLEASE know that not all of us are ungrateful and there are definitely those of us to appreciate all that you do. You are AWESOME!! The HELL with anybody who doesn't agree!! The map at 11:48 is misleading. The term Palestine was not assigned to the native Arabs before the 1960s, and in 1948, Israeli Jews were also called Palestinians. [Also side note, Jordan was also part of the Palestinian Mandate, so in that sense modern Palestinians are Jordanians in all but name]

In conversation with a Muslim friend, he claimed that the main reason for the conflict was the land. I asked, "If that is true, why don't they just focus on other, more available land, such as land in Saudi Arabia?" He tried to counter this and other questions with arguments, but eventually had to admit that it is really a dispute over the Creator and to whom He gave the land... hence, it is a dispute over religion after all.
@Worgenmen
@Worgenmen 8 жыл бұрын
Well I have to disagree, you can have strong nationalist/ethnic ties to a land, that to be fair may partially include religion but not have that be the sole basis of the claim. If 60% of America was annexed by conquest, would we accept it to simply move to Canada? Sure, maybe for the short term, but I don't think it makes sense to not factor into account the fact that people attach strong, deep tribalist bonds to their nations of origin. I think that goes both ways. That and nobody likes to graciously accept extreme violence and a subordinate position in society. Especially if they perceive the perpetrators of that violence (Likud party, for example) to be arrogant beyond comprehension.

Asher Faisal do you ever question your beliefs and use reason to think about this conflict? Do you realize there WAS NO PALESTINE prior to 1920? There term Palestine was rarely used to refer to the 3 Ottoman sub-provinces of Acre, Nablus, and Jerusalem which were actually part of the Syrian province. The ancestors of modern Palestinians would never regard themselves as "Palestinians", but rather they would regard themselves as Arabs, and more specifically they identified themselves with their cities: e.g. Jerusalemite (Qudsi), Hebronite (Khalili), Jaffite (yafi). The modern notions of Syrian, Iraqi, Kuwaiti, Palestinian, etc. are relatively new national identities came across to minds of people in the 20st century. Prior to that their identities were in this order: Muslim-=> Arab => their specific tribes or clans/city or village. Jews originate from the land of Israel, that's where they belong to and that's where was right to migrate. Palestine was actually more available than anywhere in the America, given that Palestine was sparsely populated by rural or nomadic people. The largest town in Palestine, the city of Jerusalem had no more than 30,000 people when the Zionists arrived, of whom half of them were Jewish.

You seem to be confusing the Middle East with West Asia. The Middle East and West Asia were never synonymous, and although West Asia makes up the Majority of the Middle Eastern region, it still doesn't make up the entirety of the region. The Middle East is a geopolitical transcontinental region(not confined to a single continent) which includes Western Asia(not including the Caucasus), all of Egypt(North Africa), and all of Turkey(Eurasia). It is a region that sits on the intersection of three continents(Africa, Asia and Europe). The geographical composition of the Middle East is based on shared culture, politics and history, rather than a shared continent. Also Israel is not even on the edge of Western Asia, Egypt's Sinai Peninsula is. Oh boy you need to do more research before making videos like this. And the Ottoman Empire was not Arab. You just caused so much confusion about our region and its diverse people. I know this video is old but hopefully you've learned your mistakes through the past couple of years. Anyways, for people who don't know: “North Africa” in this context only refers to the Maghreb region. Egypt is not a Maghrebi country, it is a Mashriqi/Middle Eastern country. Context here is very important. “Meanwhile, "North Africa", particularly when used in the term Middle East and North Africa (MENA), often refers only to the countries of the Maghreb.” (Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania) What we call the “Middle East” region was originally an Arab invention/concept created way before the western terms “Middle East/Near East” even existed. The original term for the Middle Eastern region was “Al Mashriq” (ٱلْمَشْرِق‎) which is Arabic for “Where the sun rises”, referring to the Eastern part of the Arab world(Egypt, Levant, Arabian Peninsula and Iraq.) In the 19th century the Western term “Middle East/Near East” was created and used to basically describe the same region that the Arab medieval historians and geographers created in the 14th century. The region was originally a division conducted by Medieval Arab Historians and Geographers such as Ibn Khaldun to geographically divide the Arab world based on the cultural, political and historical differences between the Western Berber Maghreb region(Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco) and the Eastern Mashriq part of the Arab world(Egypt, Levant, Arabian Peninsula and Iraq). When the Europeans came along in the 19th century, they created the newer terms for the same region(Middle East/Near East/the Orient) and towards the 19th and 20th century they gradually added the non Arab countries(Cyprus, Turkey, Israel, and Iran). The word “Maghreb”, the opposite region to the Middle East, also called “Al Maghreb” or “Al Maghreb Al Araby”(المغرب العربي) is Arabic for “where the Sun sets”, and it refers to the western part of the Arab world, which are the North African countries beginning with Libya and ending with Morocco(sometimes Mauritania is included). “Al Mashriq” (ٱلْمَشْرِق‎) is modern day Middle East, while “Al Maghreb” is now what people call “North Africa” which does not really constitute the entirety of North Africa but just those Berber states. The funny thing is that the British continued using the original Arabic term for the “Maghreb” for a very long time until the newer generations just started calling it “North Africa”, which brings a lot of confusion today.

I'm Jewish but you guys are just stupid to be arguing about these things. Go and neutrally find your facts before spouting crap. Israel is the only democratic nation in the middle east apart from maybe Jordan. They AREN'T perfect and some are racist and bully the Palestinians but they are attacked and terrorised by Hamas and Hizbollah and others. The matter over the land is very controversial. You have to remember that these are real people who are living human beings like you or me, they just live in a bad situation and people forget that. I feel in my PERSONAL opinion, that Gaza should be controlled internationally and the Palestinians and Israelis have a Palestinian state in the West Bank and their capital somewhere there and Israel have the rest of their present territory with the capital in Jerusalem OR Tel Aviv. Jerusalem will be a peaceful city policed by international troops but an Israeli city, COMPLETENESS open to everyone. Don't be pathetic and argue, just think about the REAL people who live there.

I am not sure I follow you. The real issues with the last couple rounds of negotiation in Dec 2000 and 2008 was that Israel based its negotiations on 1967 issues. As a gross simplification: Israel thought the beef was about the 1967 borders and who controls the Old City. The Palestinian side thought they were negotiating based upon 1948 and what they perceived Israel's creation to be a historical injustice and refugees are a big issue for them. The truth is that in 2008 Olmert and Abbas only differed a few percentages of who should get what land. One of the unbridgeable gaps between the two sides is the refugee issue. Again gross simplification: The Palestinians think refugees returning to Israel is an individual right of Palestinians. Palestinians must be able to determine or have the freedom to determine if they want to move into Israel. Israel is never going to agree to allow millions of Palestinian refugees to become Israeli citizens where Jews would then become the minority inside Israel. Remember Israel is mostly made up of Jews who were persecuted in Europe and Jews who minorities in Arab lands and left because they were persecuted or wanted their rights of self-determination. They will not agree to be a minority in Israel. The Palestinians will have to make up their mind. Do they want to continue and try to reach a just solution or accept less than full justice but have the creation of their own state where the refugees can return. Israel has to decide if land is more important than democratic liberal principles. The current admin and those to the right seems like they are more concerned about trying to annex area C than they worried about democratic principles.

Great vid and history on the whole, but there are a few serious errors that need to be pointed out. You say Jerusalem is holy to Islam. They say this for political reasons. It isn't. I'm sitting in Jerusalem now and have just spent the last week avoiding rockets from Hamas. I don't think you'd ever find Muslims firing rockets towards Medina or Mecca and certainly not the ka'aba...! Normally, people cite the koranic claim that Jerusalem is holy because Mohammad ascended to heaven from here. But again, this is deceptive because the koran says that Mohammad ascended from "the farthest mosque". There was no mosque in Jerusalem as there was no Muslim presence during Mo's lifetime (Israel was conquered afterwards). Therefore the farthest mosque was probably somewhere in modern day Syria, according to some historians. "There were people there already." At best you could have stated that this claim is hotly contested. There are more than a few eye-witness accounts that it was an empty, barren, malaria-filled land without a sole presence. Chief among these was Mark Twain. None of these people could have known the importance of their words or had a vested interest in stating what they did. But if Twain and others were right, then those Arabs that were there in 1948 came at the same time as the Jews returning home. Again, there is documentation to support the claim that Jews employed Arabs to help clean the land for farming etc. What you have then with the incidents you spoke of later during the 1930s was not 'resistance' but the beginning of a religious war, and those Jews were murdered as part of it. Thanks

Plus that Jews PURCHASED the land they settled on from Turkish & Arab landowners. The Jewish National Fund was established in 1901 to raise money to BUY THE LAND. The Ottomans were very happy to have a buyer for this empty, barren, unpopulated, swampy, useless land. It was the hard labor of these mostly secular (not religious) idealistic settlers that transformed this backwater dustbowl into a flourishing place. That's when the "indigenous" nomadic "Palestinians" started to arrive looking for work.

Theodor Herzl was completely secular. So was most of the early Zionists. To them Jewishness was a nationality, more so than a religion, and they actively worked to free the Jews from old religious customs, to make what they termed "The New Jew", a Jew which was the complete opposite of the traditional image of the bookly, pale and physically weak Jew..They didn't want a Jewish state to fulfill Biblical promises, but to build a secular, modern nation State for The Jewish People in their original homeland.

Not accurate...maybe a good prologue and points to some subject areas for further research but I would not use anything presented here as fact at the local pub over a beer with my buds. I would recommend others to research further on this site...plenty out their and then draw your own conclusions. The Jews were not enslaved by the Egyptians. New archeological evidence indicates they were craftsman and farmers. Egypt with a caste system the Jews could only advance so far.

Wrong! UN Resolution 181 was not international law. It was merely a General Assembly recommendation to alter the allocation of all former non-Arab Ottoman Empire Caliphate territory west of the Jordan River for a reconstituted Jewish state. Like other suggestions by international bodies in the 1920s and 1930s, it was unanimously rejected by the Arab leadership. That rendered it, as with the others, null and void. Therefore the right to declare sovereignty according to binding international treaties remained with the Zionists. This evidence based information may not necessarily be politically correct conventional wisdom, or fashionable in some circles, but it is 100% evidence based and accurate.

One MAJOR correction - Zionism is a national movement, inspired by Europe's spring of nations at around 1850 (national self-determination), not a religious one. The first zionists were secular, or even anti religionists, influenced by russian marxism (where they came from). Israel was chosen as the only suitable place for the jewish homeland for its religious, historical and cultural meanings, but the movement itself isn't religious.
@EladShochat
@EladShochat 10 жыл бұрын
And another one - you pretty much missed out on the fact that the 181 UN resolution also gave the palestinians a state, oh, the details. Here's a map of the partiotion plan, taken from the BBC (very fond of Israel lately) website: news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1680000/images/_1681322_israel_partition_no_ban300.gif An important thing to mention is that though the partiotion seems pretty equal (that would be unfair to the arabs who formed the majority at that time by a 2:1 ratio), almost the entire Negev deset, the triangle at the south of the land, is arid desert, as dry as California's Mojahe desert. So the Jews were pretty much given a 150 km long, 15 km wide strip of the coastline.

3:41 not exactly bro. the Quran does NOT say that God promised Jerusalem to Ismail, but rather, it actually says that JEWS are to settle in Jerusalem, and as many TRUE Muslims such as Sheikh Abdul Hadi Palazzi explained, the Palestinian claim to Jerusalem CONTRADICTS the Quran! the reason why Jerusalem is holy to Muslims, is because they believe that Jerusalem is where Mohammed ascended to haven. even so, Jerusalem has been holy to Jews sense before Islam was even a religion, Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem was built on the remains of the Jews seacond temple, and the Jews have more historical claim to Medina than the Muslims do to Jerusalem as Medina was originally Jewish before Mohammed slaughtered them all. and this does not apply to ALL Arabs and Muslims, but a lot of them seem to hate Jews more than they love Jerusalem, as one of the 12 main gates to Jerusalem was named "Dung Gate" because the Arabs use to throw sewage over the gate and into the city to show there contempt for the Jews who lived there.

The United States did not exercise its first veto until 1970, on a resolution regarding Southern Rhodesia, which is present-day Zimbabwe. Since then, it has used its veto 79 times, with more than 40 related to issues in the Middle East. The majority have been resolutions that have criticised the Israeli government or failed to condemn armed Palestinian factions in the same language as that being used for Israel. It used its last veto to block a resolution that would term Israeli settlement activity in Palestinian territory "illegal" and demand a halt to all such actions. Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the UN, said her country "reject[ed] in the strongest terms the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity", but the resolution "risk[ed] hardening the positions of both sides" and moving them away from negotiations.
