Same ol' counter density problem. You have to move pieces from the map to see the terrain features such as small dots, completely surrounded by stacks. This game is for robots or young people.

I did like the smaller scale GOSS game, the 1940 "magazine" game. I forget the name of the game (see, memory goes along with sight!)

Wimp.😅 Just kidding. Great overview. At 5:20 while going thru the player aids, "Weather, cuz you know, you gotta have complicated weather. Why not." Given GOSS' reputation that made me lol. 😂

The movement and stacking rules are a couple of the worst elements to GOSS. While they read well enough, in actual play they are a nightmare. On the other hand, the combat resolution subsystem is really very good. I also agree with your assessment regarding the speed and ease with which units can entrench in the system. While I like the level of detail they've given artillery, I am a bit suspicious that arty is too powerful in the system. I need some more hands on experience with it to confirm or deny those suspicions, so maybe 2025 will be the year I finalize my opinion on this system.

Thanks for watching. Yes Arty can be strong. Those 1 R shifts add up. The magic Engineering is really annoying. I also think the Command Supply rules are onto something great... but then fuck it up with weak rule organization.

@@war_gamer I do like how the artillery works in GOSS, but I'm concerned it may be too strong defensively. I absolutely agree about the engineering and speed with which IP's and ENT's pop up in the game. The supply rules are really very nice. The frustrating thing is that there isn't a GOSS game in which you actually get to use the supply rules as written for both sides. Each game has a varying amount of convoluted special rules to handle supply for one or both sides for at least a portion of the game. The mandatory lulls are also really annoying. It's heavy-handed scripting that, ironically, could be handled through the existing supply system very nicely, without the need for al those additional rules. The "Monty Takes Command" rules in Wacht Am Rhein are particularly bad. Of all the GOSS games, WaR is the one I am most tempted to sell (not least because I have Last Blitzkrieg, which for me is the ultimate operational level Bulge game). There is an updated version of the HHF game specific rules, which I've used with the 2020 series rules from LF. They seem to be an improvement over the original HHF rules, but they still aren't what I would consider "good". What attracts me to GOSS is the size and scope of the games in the series so far. GOSS is pretty close in scale to BCS, but BCS only handles about 2-3 weeks of operations in a game, whereas GOSS campaigns (aside from WaR) run several months and cover a wider area. Atlantic Wall is a huge game, and the only operational level game I know of that covers the Normandy campaign from the initial paradrops through August 23rd. Although GMT's upcoming Battle for Normany Deluxe might extend its coverage that late as well.

The SFB rules are MUCh better than GOSS, especially the earlier GOSS games. The series rule book that came with Lucky Forward shows improvement, but there's still work to be done to make the system really good. It's a real shame GOSS is so underdeveloped, as I think it has some interesting concepts and mechanics, and does have some promise, but it is currently too clunky and fiddly, with some questionable decisions having been made with regards to various rules.

@@war_gamer Star Fleet Battles. I was replying to @5769hornet's mention of star fleet battles in his comment above. SFB is crunchy and full of chrome, but from a rules writing and organization standpoint, is a better experience than GOSS. RIght now, HHF is the GOSS game that I think holds the most promise. If someone were trying to get into GOSS, that is the game I would recommend they play (but use the 2020 series rules and the updated HHF rules). True, the newer rule book is a lot longer, but it is a little better organized, with better clarity, and lots of examples throughout, many of which are illustrated.
