One of the Masterpiece Krithi of Dikshitar ! Hiranmayeem Lakshmeem Ragam Lalitha 15th Mela Janya Rupaka Talam Muthuswami Dikshitar Krithi This Kriti is in the second Vibhakti Here the poet-composer Muthuswami Dikshithar (1775-1835) describes Lakshmi herself as being golden (Hiranmayeeem); she is the gold that he aspires for. There is an interesting story behind this song. The Song is to pay homage to Goddess Lakshmi. Lakshmi herself as being golden (Hiranmayeeem); she is the gold that he aspires for. There is an interesting story behind this song. One day, it is said, Dikshithar’s wife longingly asked for some golden jewellery. Dikshithar was not in the financial situation to provide these for his wife. One of his disciples suggested to Dikshithar that if he were to go to the court and sing in praise of the king, the king would give him enough to buy some jewellery for his wife. Dikshithar refused and said that he would sing only in praise of his Goddess, never for a man! Then he created this beautiful composition, calling his Goddess the Golden One. That night, Diskhithar’s wife dreamt of the Goddess who came and poured gold on her and said, ‘there, are you satisfied?’. On waking up she apologized to Diskshithar for ever wanting any material wealth when they were so blessed with Divine wealth. P hiraṇmayīṃ lakṣmīṃ sadā bhajāmi hīna mānavāśrayaṃ tyajāmi I always worship Lakshmi the embodiment of gold and prosperity. I reject taking shelter from mean people. AP cira-tara sampatpradāṃ kṣīrāmbudhi tanayāṃ (madhyama kāla sāhityam) hari vakṣaḥsthalālayāṃ hariṇīṃ caraṇa kisalayāṃ kara kamala dhṛta kuvalayāṃ marakata 1maṇi-maya valayām She is the eternal bestower of prosperity. She is the daughter of mystical ocean of milk. Her holy abode is Sri Hari's chest and her complexion is fair. Her feet are delicate like tender leaves. She wears beautiful emerald-studded bangles and holds a blue-lotus in her hand. C śvēta dvīpa vāsinīṃ śrī kamalāmbikāṃ parāṃ bhūta bhavya vilāsinīṃ bhū-sura pūjitāṃ varām mātaraṃ abja mālinīṃ māṇikyābharaṇa dharāṃ gīta vādya vinōdinīṃ girijāṃ tāṃ indirām (madhyama kāla sāhityam) śīta kiraṇa nibha vadanāṃ śrita cintāmaṇi sadanāṃ pīta vasanāṃ guru guha - mātula kāntāṃ lalitām She resides on Sweta island . She is transcendental Goddess with her glory speading in the past and future. Wise priests worship her. Mother Lakshmi is adorned with lotus flowers and gem-studded ornaments. She enjoys songs and music on instruments. She is Indira. Her face is beautiful like moon. She fulfills wishes of devotees like the mystical gem Chintamani. Her dress is golden yellow. She is the charming consort Sri Maha Vishnu the maternal uncle of Guru Guha. Raga Lalitha Janyam of 15th mela Mayamalavagowlai. Aro: S R1 G3 M1 D1 N3 S Av: S N3 D1 M1 G3 R1 S Yet another graceful raga that is meditative and calming is Lalitha. A janya of Mayamalavagowla, the pancama is absent in this raga. The arohana-avarohana of Lalitha would be SRGMDNS/SNDMGRS, a symmetrical shadava scale. Many listeners find a similarity with raga Vasantha, which differs in using the chatushruti dhaivata, and the SMGM phrase in ascent. The notes present in this raga are sadja, suddha rishabha, antara gandhara, suddha madhyama, suddha dhaivata, and kakali nishada. Lalitha is well known for Dikshitar’s ‘Hiranmayim Lakshmim’ and ‘Agastiswaram’ and Shyama Sastri’s ‘Nannu brovu Lalitha’, all of them melting, appealing pieces. When his wife desired material wealth and jewellery, Dikshitar is said to have sung this prayer to the goddess of wealth. That night, a bedecked goddess appeared in all her glory in his wife’s dream. Need she have asked for more? In film music, Lalitha kept a low profile until Ilaiyaraaja came along and composed the fabulous ‘Idazhil Kathai Ezhudum’ in Unnal Mudiyum Thambi. This song begins with a signature phrase SNDMD,MGMGRS and ends with sangatis that sweep over two octaves.
