From the “Oregon Art Beat” archives: A 2016 visit to the late master ceramicist Hiroshi Ogawa’s studio as he crafts, then loads dried work into his traditional Japanese anagama earthen kiln.
Cameras followed Ogawa and friends as they fire up the kiln with wood to a sustained temperature of 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. After a week of cooling, Ogawa then conducted an opening ceremony, unloaded the flame-painted pots, then celebrated with his community of potters.

That is a beautiful story, I would like to start doing pottery on my property in the bush, I have a lot of fallen trees up here so plenty of wood to fire a kiln. I have been a chef for 25 years and have always loved ceramics to present food on.

Why do you fire for so long? I know a lot of firings are done inside of 8 hours or so, so 5 days makes me wonder what the purpose is.

Public broadcasting really is a national treasure that we collectively take for granted. I am very grateful for content as beautiful as this. Thank you for making it available.

Look at all the global warming in that carbon rich smokey pollution, should be using an electric kiln.

These kilns are fired VERY infrequently, and filled very efficiently, firing a LOT of work per firing, and burn far less than most any industry. This is hardly a major source of pollution. The results on them require this type of firing, and frankly, considering that the fire does all the decorating, it requires virtually no mining of glaze chemicals/materials, no refining or transporting of such, (and the energy/pollution from those) to decorate the work as would be required in an electric kiln, whether commercial or artisanal.

@@grandcarriage1 Could not care less if they fired one piece daily the same way. Could not care less about all the "carbon". I do find your justification amusing.

This is not a dragon kiln. This is clickbait. What is it with liberals and lack of basic honesty?

You sir are incorrect. Its called a dragon kiln because of its shape.
