Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

From my teens Hiroshima has captured my imagination as the place where innocents met with the worst humanity can do. Without realising it, forty years later, my four weeks in Japan built to this cathartic moment and was, perhaps, an unconscious pilgrimage to pay my respects to those lives wiped out in a moment. Having to visit twice in two days, such were the insane emotions experienced on the first afternoon, the second visit was no more comfortable than the first. Alone, a solo-traveller, I found myself wandering the acres of memorial park barely able to hold together the gamut of emotion. Guilt, sorrow, sadness, anger, and ultimately hope. Looking at the faces of others, Peace Memorial Park has that affect on those open to their consciousness.
If you travel to Japan only once in your life, please pay your respects at Hiroshima. An assured melancholic day studying the many dozens of monuments will be rewarded with an odd benevolent calm, peace, understanding, and a resoluteness that we must never let conflict reach these calamitous heights again. “Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil”
