There was, and then for a while, there were two. The West Village is where the Stonewall Inn is. But after a while, it started getting pricey, so Chelsea became the next gayborhood. Both were active gayborhoods in the late 1980s through the 1990s. But The Village gradually got de-gayed as young, "hip" str8 couples moved in. And as NYC itself became increasingly unaffordable over the past 2 decades, all of the gays left The City. I remember back in the 1990s that you could find, scattered around The West Village, stores selling gay/lesbian t-shirts, buttons, keychains, and all manner of stuff, along with a few LGBT+ bookstores. There was once a large enough LGBT+ population there to support so of those stores. All of those shops are gone, the last of the bookstores, The Oscar Wilde Bookstore, having closed at the start of the 2010s. It's all rather depressing.
