Seeing this, I'm going to try and get someone to help me build a little place for me to live where I'm safe. I'm on disability, but this is very cost effective. Im very excited about this, hope for a home at last! I live in tn , hopefully our dirt works along the same way yours does. Yours looks much drier, i live on a mtn. Hey, I've been researching cob for about a decade now (my state requires a ton of permits though - for any structure, so it's a currently unrealized dream). And I'm in the same boat as you, for the most part. But from what I've learned, most soils would have at least some amount of clay in them. But the cob mix is basically clay subsoil (no organic bits), rough gravel/sand, straw, and water. It's just a matter of making different mixes and testing them to figure out what mix works best with your soil. And yes, there are guides to help you figure that out - there are enough resources to be found if you look - here on KZbin (Miguel is one of the ones I like best), online searches, books... If you put some effort into it, especially with gathering free or cheap parts to use over time when you find them instead of waiting to buy everything you need at the last minute when it's time to build, you can really do this affordably. Good luck!

Born, bred and raised in the Southwest. Adobe’ is my life and every Adobe’ home I’ve lived in is the best kind of building material for a living space. Cool in the heat of the summer and warm in the coldest of winters. Native cultures and ancient people had it right all along… 😊

It’s such a delight to see him getting his beautiful structures out to more of the world. What a treat to see! 🎉 He didn’t mention that when you are inside these structures there is a distinct feeling you get, like a warm embrace from Mother Earth. I don’t know how else to describe it. Congrats Miguel! I hope people contact you to build one for them. A home for $1,000 is something most people could use now a days. They are truly something special. I’m so proud 😊.

Hi There, Miguel here...Glad you like the Hobbit Cobin! I built this about 12 years ago now and I havent done any maintainance on it at all. The three rules to ensure the longevity of a cob structure is that it has a good pair of boots, a jacket and a hat, namely, a foundation, plaster and roof, which this does... Yes indeed, Brown is the new Green!

What an industrious, brilliant and imaginative person. His furnace is absolutely ingenious. The fact that each structure took him no more than a couple of months at the most, that he created separate rooms in which to live his life, so as not to exceed the building code limits before he required permits and that he has a sauna or 'every man needs a home, every man needs a cave'... left me in awe. His creative use of materials from the Earth such as wood, straw & the earth itself plus his willingness to do manual labour shows that the accepted methods of construction & the economic exchange of goods does not have to be the only way. He also used materials we just throw away and materials we regard as inferior building products such as his use of straw for insulation, or even old clothes, shows just how much we have made 'newness' the be all and end all' of our existence. Let's not over look this man's amazing artistry. I just went along with the flow, never questioning the existing standard nor imagining that I could do things differently. It is too late for me as I am near the end of my life and am too disabled to be able to change. I admire people, such as this man, more than words can say.
@toshikotanaka32495 ай бұрын
I agree with everything you say but it's going to be a long and arduous uphill battle to convince people, especially people who's livelihood depend on modern construction methods and materials, that this method of building isn't shabby, cheap and trashy.

One of my fond childhood memories was when we had just moved into our newly built house, we hadn't landscaped the back yard yet. I had read about adobe in a book, and decided to try it. I made probably 100 bricks, and stashed them in a corner of the yard to dry. The next day, they had firmed up quite a bit in the hot California sun, so I started stacking them into a fort, using more straw-filled mud as mortar. I got about 2' high before mom found me working and put a stop to my impromptu cottage construction. Building with dirt is remarkably intuitive, and I spent two happy days playing in mud during my little endeavor.

Housing is a human right. Not everyone is affluent. I advocate that such simple cost effective and eco-friendlier building methods become the norm as well as renewable energies like solar, wind and water. We need eco-builded cities integrated into the nature. As the economic crisis and wars have a grip on humanity currently, we have to re-thing the whole way we live and want to raise further generations. Thank you for sharing your cob house with us. A great inspiration and the building style was different from the usual earth bags, I find the structure this way more sturdy and the hay isolation can cater the colder climates.

Someone will always come along and ruin a good thing. As long as sin exists in this world nothing will last forever. Tribes in the past had a paradise like this once with even a welfare system that fed everyone but what ended up happening? My people turned to human sacrifices and cannibalism and then blamed everyone else but themselves for their downfall and their problems while becoming a third world drug warzone... 🫤 Every place starts great and has a rich culture in history but wickedness will always rear up its ugly head no matter where you go nothing ever lasts. Even IF we all collectively tried again some punk kid will convince a lot of people to do something horrible someday while claiming it's the right thing to do 👎

My grandparents house in northern Mexico was built like a country house - room by room, as money allowed for each room to be built. The first room was built when they didn't have much, out of Adobe sealed with plaster. The rooms built later from rebar and concrete are probably stronger, but they are brutal in the summer or winter without heating or cooling. The adobe room is the most liveable one in the house, by far.

Cob & adobe are actually the same material, sand, clay & straw, its just that adobe is made into bricks, whereas cob is sculpted in place. It is best to have a roof over a cob structure to protect it from rain, but it can also have a lime or earthen plaster with a lindseed oil sealer.

10:57 I suggest you put a metal basket or container on top of it, fill it with big stones (may look nice, for the interior, if you wish), sprinkle/pour the water on the stones, not the barrel. I suggest beer, instead of water ;) The hops' aroma is both, very "woody" and green. For a cheaper use, old bread, fermented with some spices of ur desire, can be a cheaper substitute. But there you have no hops aroma. You could even add commercial yeasts to the bread fermentation, if you don't drink it.
