Wow he has great IQ and awareness for such a young player. Everyone has their first “keep your head up” moment at some point as a bantam; impressive the way he shook it off and didn’t shy away from contact afterwards. Even laid a couple clean checks with the exception of that hilarious cross-check

Good skater too. That young man has really put in the time. My best friend in high school got his keep your head up moment crossing a blueline as the puck carrier. He got absolutely smoked. I can still hear the sounds of the skates, the stick, the helmet all in collision and then to the ice. It was a clean hit, just really, really hard. He manned it up, somehow got to his feet and to the bench, but he was in absolute misery on the bench. He learned.

Yeah, it's an adjustment. When my older son did his first Bantam game he got drilled when he went on the ice. Barely had two steps down and got laid out. Definitely a "welcome to bantam" moment.

As a hockey fan and competitive tendy, I’m cringing at how off-center that goalie was on that first play
@deeformed2475
@deeformed2475 2 жыл бұрын
For anyone that wants to argue that “it’s just the way the camera is positioned, there is an easy way to find if the goalie actually is off-center. 1. Draw a line from the middle (padded) post to the goalie, and then to the puck. If not straight or close to straight, goalie is out of position 2. The fact that the shot went to the outside of the goalie, but still had a lot of space in between it and the post shows that the goalie was off-center

When I played my first bantam game, none of the opposing players came near me due to my giant height of 6'2" as well as having the physique of a running back. I have happy memories of creating "welcome to bantam" moments on all the other teams and took pride in that fact. And despite my lack of skill in skating or scoring (more of a playmaker), I was often on lines with star players for my innate ability to intimidate the other team with my height and girth. Of course, that only lasted for a couple of years; however, my reputation had cemented itself on the rink and gave me the confidence to continue my "reign of terror" on the ice. But that said ... a word of warning to all you young players. This was back in the early 80s, way before anyone cared about concussions and it's probably the reason I suffer from debilitating migraines to this day. So be careful out there kids. Believe you me, it's not worth it.

This kid has some good reads. Even when his initial chances didn't pan out he had the presence of mind to throw the puck back in the slot. I like the physical aspect as well. Very good instincts and use of speed to close gaps or get open. Good use of angles near the boards to hit players or gain possession on the puck. Definitely coachable.

Not really. All hits were with arms leading into the hit first. Typical result of Coaches negligence of teaching hit technique. I have seen some very bad complete right behind the wrist where growth plates are (critical for proper bone growth) fractures exactly because of this. Coaches usually have no idea what constitutes legal hit and they, as a result, don't teach them. What these kids do can be dangerous for both players. You always must go into the hit with your shoulder first where you leading foot is in vertical extension of your shoulder. Only then, upon the impact, you can start raising your elbow to create safe space for you if so needed. What you see is all "fun" until you have one player out for entire season or more when he gets hurt. I've witnessed it. I've seen it. It was one of the reasons I became Coach because I couldn't stand watching kids get hurt because of lack of proper training
@mitsanut5869
@mitsanut5869 2 жыл бұрын
A few years back, I wrote a book about how to train and coach kids. Because of my unconventional methods, I was able to make my players and teams get better 3,4 times faster than others, with much less ice time available. I've never published the book because my plan was to make Video Disk with it, so everyone who would be able to read and view it, would understand how things actually work. But so far, I haven't been able to accomplish the second part due to lack of time available to me. I have not been involved in coaching for almost 15 years now; However, since I am seeing same patterns repeating over and over, I am starting to think about completing my project so it can benefit everyone who is interested in getting better faster and without unnecessary long term injuries that often kill promising future of many, many young players.

We started hitting back in peewee. If contact has been pushed back to bantam, that is great. In peewee especially there was such a difference in the sizes of the kids and a great variation in skill level. It made it hard for kids to stick with it if they were a little behind in development. Better to be able to develop the skills and joy for the game first. Looks like it was a good game he had out there.
@shyduck_
@shyduck_ Жыл бұрын
Officiating pee wees was always a bit of a nightmare for me for this reason. You'd always have a kid or two who could almost pass as midget let alone bantam, and there were always kids getting hurt from clean hits. Then you'd then have parents screaming at you for not calling a penalty clean hit. Just a no-win situation.

Wow that was soo long ago for me. Happened when stick handling down the ice and watching the puck. Bang, like hitting a wall. Had to learn to not look down to much. Played football on the American side and learned early on how to take and give hits. Really helped my game. Good hitter and not much else. Decent player. And we had a bench clearing every other game. Had an awful team, but you could fight in those days. Late seventies. Just wished I played more and also started late. Best sport I ever played except boxing. Hockey is still number one. Played one mining town team once and the kids were all like 180 pounds and had mustaches. Grew some huge kids they played on slow ice and they hit a lot.

Bantam was easily my favorite years playing hockey, I had my grow spurt last year Peewee so started first year bantam at 5'4" 140 lbs so I had a good size over 3/4 of every one else. Being a winger with speed I loved coming in hot on forchecks and just being a huge nuisance to the other teams D and goalie. Basically a bigger Gallahger lol so that was a fun year. 2nd got called up to play D and that was a whole other side of the game to me, and didnt take long to earn a rep where opposing F wouldnt even want to come to the net to screen our goalie, those were good times. Unfortunately in midget, back to playing forward, I handed grew ( 28yo now and still same size ffs ) so I didnt really have the same impact but still was solid enough to take a couple of towers down lol but definitely got the worst end of multiple huge hits, not all clean since still had a bad rep. 3 bad hits from behind and my head hitting in the boards each giving me 3 concussions. Ahh the good old days lol

loved hockey and loved hitting and scoring but as soon as you get into CLUB hockey the politics are just ridiculous. im 28 too and in my time it was very bad, all the rich kids got to play or big guys who couldn't skate worth a fuck. that was Alberta and im sure its 10X worse with these private schools now i just wish more organizations would looks for the team player not the flashy or rich kids. give everyone a chance. After REM AAA i was sick of the hockey politics and quit giving a fuck and was still captain my last 2 years. Tried a bit for junior and was a force but still wasn't given a second look cause i wasnt heard of. my main point is roll the lines at minor hockey level and give everyone a chance instead of defeating there confidence early on

@@s.v.saylaraye3212 yeah it was allowed 20 years ago. things have changed alot since. I think it's for the best to be honest especially at young age where your body/head isn't fully developed yet.

I would probably agree. Coaches have to adjust, though. Teach the kids to keep their heads up before they have to worry about getting laid out, so it isn't as much of a transition when guys are bigger and stronger.

@@christ9359 keeping his head up should be taught during Novice anyway. Always know where your teammates are so you can pass the puck ! too often you see players look down the puck and never in front at this age and they keep this very very bad habit until Bantam where it is not acceptable to eat the puck.

They don’t even allow hitting in bantam Anymore. And they’re phasing it out in hs too down here in GA. It’s so dumb.

Where is this? We had full contact start in pee-wee at 12 years old. Isn’t bantam 14-15 year olds? Maybe the prairies in Canada were a little savage with how we started the violence.

Number 21’s first hit was a textbook cross check. Also basically from behind. Could have been a lot worse than it was. Dirty play.

This kids pretty good. He’s fast, keeps his head up, and has good awareness. He was better than I was as a bantam. As for the hitting, I never really went through the same issues that most people faced. First of all, I dropped from an AAA team to an AA team though I played a year up so the game was significantly slower and easier to adjust, and I was always one of the taller kids on the ice so I could most often brace for hits and be perfectly fine. Use the wall to keep yourself up and you most likely won’t fall. Ive been hit up against a wall and made it out losing minimal speed.
