Hi all! Please note that I had made some changes to the edit, adding some additional comments about certain things. I wasn't able to by the time of release, otherwise I'd have to wait 5 hours for the video to re-export. One of which was that mentions of "Arsenic & Old Lace" could well be related to the film, despite it coming out 4 years after this. The reason why is because "Arsenic & Old Lace" was filmed in 1941, but left on the shelf for years until after the war. With that being said, it's highly likely Grant may have had the script. Or it could just be a massive coincidence. I hope you enjoy anyway!

“Old lace” was a common phrase used in connection with elderly women. There even was a song written in 1933 titled ”Old Lace.” “The title ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ comes from the term Lavender and Old Lace; a phrase used during the Victorian era to describe the homes of genteel ladies that were decorated with lace curtains, lace dollies, and smelled of lavender.”

Cary Grant screwball films you have to watch MULTIPLE times and each time more enjoyable than the last as you pick up all the inserted dialogue and underlying humor jokes, especially if you learn abt what was scandalous or a thing gossip for back then as an in joke(like you know British cultural jokes better than me alot in these movies are USA American culture the era jokes political here too). Howard Hawks is a genius and Leo McKarey were the 2 who did the best Cary Grant humor films. Also the UK gossip news press tabloids [DMail-Express-Telegraph]are still as bad and gutless rotten as the reporters they show misrepresenting statements and situations just for a headline scoop than journalism facts.

Also, imagine Katherine Hepburn was set to play Hildy but she was already booked. It would have been as good but more KATHERINE! but Howard had loved working with Cary and Katherine during Bringing Up Baby, which because people back then were not fully ready for MADCAP cartooninsh screw ball comedy yet and Kate got the ruined as poison and this movie was to start bringing her name back but instead she waited until The Philadelphia Story - Another epic great classic Grant/Hepburn film. ETHICAL GOOD JOURNALISTS INVESTIGATE objectively, which Hildy is miles above the goons around her like thug gangsters just waiting to write crap for paycheck than be printers of truth info how a real law abiding democracy works with press.

If you want to see a film that stars Rosalind Russell showcasing her ability to deliver rapid-fire dialogue of a very witty script, is both hilarious and heartwarming, has extraordinary costuming and set design - “Auntie Mame” (1958) is perfection. Highly recommended!

For my money, the "Ralph Bellamy" joke is one of the 10 best in movie history. In his book, The New Biographical Dictionary of Film, David Thomson called Cary Grant "the best and most important actor in the history of the cinema." I'm inclined to agree.

Ralph Bellamy played an equivalent role in the Cary Grant/Irene Dunne classic “The Awful Truth.” Cliff Edwards (aka “Ukulele Ike”), who played reporter Endicott, was the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney’s “Pinocchio” and sang the Oscar-winning song “When You Wish Upon a Star.” You MUST see Rosalind Russell in 1958’s “Auntie Mame.” It is a comic gem.

Just a bit of word-nerd trivia (because I'm a huge word nerd). The term "man Friday" is derived from the book Robinson Crusoe: "Friday is one of the main characters of Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe and its sequel The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Robinson Crusoe names the man Friday, with whom he cannot at first communicate, because they first meet on that day. The character is the source of the expression "Man Friday", used to describe a male personal assistant or servant, especially one who is particularly competent or loyal."

I've read that the reason Katharine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell were never in the same film is that they were both often competing for the same roles. They both often played sophisticated, strong-willed, intelligent and quick-witted professional women. They both also played opposite Archie Leach, you know, that fellow in the movies. Other wonderful Rosalind Russell movies that I recommend you react to are "The Women," "Auntie Mame," and "Gypsy."

Thank you, Marty! Your reaction was so much fun. Howard Hawks was famous for fast-paced, over lapping dialog. This pace was not common at the time, and having the characters talk over one another while still maintaining the story was great feat. Grant and Russell were fantastic together. Ralph Bellamey played the losing suitor more than once. Roz Russell was just top-tier in every film she appeared. My favorites are The Women, 1939, and Autie Mame, 1958, and Gypsy, 1962. The $2,500.00 was for the insurance policy. Hildy retrieves Bruce's wallet from Walter's little friend, then she returned the wallet to Bruce, now with the real money replaced with counterfeit money. Manic, a great tag. Your trivia review is an extra treat. The trivia of 240 words/minute vs the standard of 90/wpm, or 150/wpm outside of films, fantastic. Sorry, some of my comments were written before your great trivia section. Again, do enjoy Roz in Auntie Mame, just your treasure. I've seen this film many times, a treasure. Cary Grant mainly worked for RKO at the time as did Katharine Hepburn. Rosalind Russell mainly worked for MGM. In this case they both seem to have been loaned out to Columbia, who made this film. As such it was unlikely that Hepburn and Russell would get to work together.

Hildy got the wallet back from the pickpocket, I believe. It was seven days behind schedule, but we have to realise also that films had much shorter production times than they have now. This was filmed from Sept. 27 through Nov. 21 -- less than two months. _Citizen Kane_ also has (less madcap) overlapping dialogue. Years later, the television comedy detective show, _Moonlighting_ (finally now streaming on Hulu) had very madcap overlapping dialogue. Cybill Shepherd, who had a relationship with Hawks fan and friend, Peter Bogdanovich (who did quasi _Bringing Up Baby_ remake, _What's Up, Doc?),_ told the creator of _Moonlighting,_ Glen Gordon Caron, after reading the script, "This is a Hawksian comedy." Caron, strangely, didn't know what that was. If you ever want to react to a TV series like that, there it is. There have been a few more remakes of _The Front Page._ One with Walter Matthau and Walter and Jack Lemmon as Hildy that kept the title. Carol Burnett plays Molly Malloy. _Switching Channels_ with Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner keeps the gender switch but moves the story to TV news. I've often thought about the possibility of making both characters women or changing Walter instead of Hildy. I suppose the latter might not be liked because the Walter character does every underhanded trick in the book to keep Hildy around (although so does Streisand's character in _What's Up, Doc?)._ But who knows?

1. In regard to actors remembering the dialogue, you should understand that learning their lines is what actors do for a living. Additionally, all the actors in this movie were experienced stage actors quite used to learning two and three hour plays. In the movies, they only had to learn the lines for the next days filming. Actors, by definition, have good memories. For example, when Clark Gable was in the army during the Second World War, he got perfect on the officer's exam by the simple expedient of memorizing the entire Manual of Arms. 2. It is quite true that Grant played the mock turtle (a reference to mock turtle soup, which is made from beef) in Alice and Wonderland, however, the line "get in there, you mock turtle" is in the original play from 1928 and, so, is a happy coincidence. 3. Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to the great movies of the past.

Great movie! The idea of a teaming of Roz and Kate Hepburn is an intriguing one but very unlikely to happen during that time period, plus the timing for the pairing of those two particular women would have been off. The reason it was unlikely was that it was rare for two major female stars to be featured in the same film (there were exceptions, most notably "The Women" which was the film Rosalind made just before this movie and the one along with this that really moved her up into the top ranks) since the studio looked at it as squandering the potential that two separate pictures starring them could bring in as opposed to just one costarring vehicle. Also there would be the issue of finding a script with equally important roles for each actress, it was easier to pair them with an equally major male star or more often an established but less important leading man or the third option of a rising male performer who they wanted to spotlight but wasn't quite ready to carry a film on their own. The reason it would have been unlikely specifically for Roz and Kate to be teamed is that Hepburn was under contract to RKO until 1938 at which point she was label box office poison and departed back East to regroup and scored on Broadway with the stage version of The Philadelphia Story and didn't return to Hollywood until 1940 when she signed with MGM for the film version and renewed success. 1940 was also the year that Roz ascended to the top rank of MGM stars and started having films written expressly for her as did Kate though mostly Roz's leaned toward comedy and except for her films with Spencer Tracy most of Hepburn's were dramas. So neither woman would have been prone to sharing the top spot with another feature actress, Roz did plenty of that in her first few years in films playing in support to Myrna Loy and Joan Crawford among others. Someone else mentioned Auntie Mame and I strongly second that suggestion!! Roz fuels that film with enough centrifugal force to power three movies! She's an utter delight.

This past weekend I've been re-watching a few episodes of the short-lived TV series "The Naked Truth" starring Téa Leoni as a former classy photographer now working for a tabloid. When I watched this for the first time I thought it was probably the fastest paced film I'd ever seen but it is comedy genius from Grant and Russell as well as the director Howard Hawks. Hawks is one of my favourite directors and one of the best ever I think. I would recommend watching "Ball of Fire"(1941) another screwball comedy directed by Hawks starring Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck and Dana Andrews. Or if you want a more serious film by Hawks I would recommend "The Big Sleep" (1946) starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and it's one of the best Film Noirs ever made.

The name Archie Leach pops up in other movies, most famously (perhaps) is A Fish Called Wanda.

"Switching Channels" 1988, with Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner is essentially a scene by scene remake of this except they are tv reporters. It's not the worst remake ever but it's not as good as this :)

The script was delivered at such a rapid pace that the screenplay was twice as long as the average script, but had the same running length.

I know that "Auntie Mame" has been mentioned as the quintessential Rosalind Russell must watch, but if you want to enjoy other roles, may I recommend "The Women", "Gypsy", and lastly, "They Met In Bombay" which teams her up with another Hollywood legend, Clark Gable.

36:01 No matter what people feel about Bruce, I don't think anyone likes his mother. And that feeling started from when we were told she'd be living with them for the first year.

Its funny, I just saw a review of a movie I liked called "The Thing From Another World". Which is said to be directed by Howard Hawks (although there was this other guy who might of directed it, they're not sure). And they always said he liked this overlapping dialog, which they have in that sci-fi movie. But now I've finally seen for the 1st time with you a much more typical Howard Hawks movie, with his overlapping dialogue (which I have to say, I could not follow all of what was being said or precisely what was happening, I would have to watch it multiple times because my brain just doesn't work that fast, perhaps with the speed slowed down, and even then I might not get it).

46:39 Would the person on the other side of the phone be taking that down in short hand or would they be typing up a storm? Back then you had to go to typing school to learn either of course. I sometimes think if we ever get stuck back in time we'd have a pretty good chance of getting jobs as typists because of how much we rely on computers nowadays, but then I remember not many of us really know how to handle a typewriter.

did you recognize that man from the movies tho? Ralph was in a ton. Apparently Pretty Woman was his last film... sad. Awful Truth is still my favorite Grant movie. Hope you get to see that one soon :) This was a great film, glad you liked it

Another mention of an actor's real name in the movie. Cary Grant said Archie Leach owed him money. Archie Leach was Cary Grant's real name.

Your comment about the movie seeming to play at triple speed isn’t far off. The rule of thumb for screenplays is one page equals about one page of screen time. His Girl Friday, which runs a little over ninety minutes, has a screenplay that’s 191 pages long.

"Stage Door" is about a group of young actresses trying to break into Broadway. They're all staying in what used to be call a woman's theatrical boarding house. Great inter action. Eve Arden is also in it with Ginger Rogers and Ann Miller and Lucille Ball.

Picture noted for characters talking over each other's lines. That's one of the reasons the dialogue is so quick.

Marty you need to be aware of a scam that's now going on re KZbin. I loved your review of this movie and wrote 'Wonderful stuff' in the comments box on my tablet, when a message appeared preventing me from sending it, unless I paid for the comment to be added. I declined and watched Jay and Amber reacting to 'No Country for Old Men', and the same thing happened. I can add comments on my phone but not on my tablet. Clearly there's something untoward going on you should be aware of. I've deleted the KZbin app on my tablet but still have it on my phone.

Nice you are reacting to these great vintage films, Marty. But I do not like how you manipulate the framing of so many scenes to create close-ups for your reactions. In essence, you are re-cutting this classic film to make it something other than director Howard Hawks intended. You have done this previously to other films, too. This practice suggests you have little respect for the work.

Respectfully, if you want to view the movie as intended, well…watch the movie. That’s not the point of a reaction, and I have no problem with creators manipulating video for effect if it’s done well.
