My dad was in prison lot of my childhood. he was always mosty illiterate. When he got out I had moved to college and he taught himself to read and write so he could text me and write me letter. He may have not been there much for me as a kid but that spoke volumes.

He barely got started on his story. Maybe the audience got to hear more and this was cut for the video? He spent time in jail, has been homeless, and has shared mental health care challenges. He is the epitome of determination and perseverance! I'm for sure buying his book, numerous copies for our school library and classroom!! Thank you Oliver for your vulnerability!

What an AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL story. As a teacher that has taught students and learners from all over the world to read, it's not easy teaching people from different countries whose first language is not English. Learning to read was probably like a foreign language to Oliver and came with so many struggles for this young man, and I'm so proud of you, just as the world is. We all are rooting for you Oliver, to continue your amazing journey of becoming an author, motivational speaker and whatever else you desire. You have proven that you can accomplish anything that you put your mind to and have inspired millions of people across the globe. God bless you Oliver and keep excelling to higher heights of success! Happy Holidays - Tamron and Oliver!🥰❤

Oliver, you are a true inspiration. Learning of your journey and what you have been able to achieve through your dedication and commitment to learning to read, is one of the reasons I help others learn to read. Promoting literacy and the joy of reading is something that fulfills me each day. In honor of my Grandfather that was not afforded the opportunity to learn to read or write, THANK YOU, for making it. Thank you for taking hold of the great equalizer. It is one that you can use to further educate and inform yourself-and one that you can use to inspire, motivate, and express yourself. You now get to choose so much more of all that rests upon the pages of a book, a magazine, a newspaper, or even a scroll. You have the power of reading. We are all so proud of you 💛 📖

He's amazing, reading is very important in a child's life, let alone an adult life. I was a reader but after losing my mom, I got more into reading and I was reading this author, every book she was putting out. Then 3 years later my sister got sick and I was reading a good book then she died and I was already traumatized from losing my mom, when my sister passed I forgot how to read literally. And I still struggle to this day. And my job requires reading denied claims. When I have to read something, I just wanna schem through it, which is not good. Losing my mom and sister traumatized me so bad, I developed generalized anxiety disorder and depression, I had 3 therapist. The only that keep me going was I still had 3 kids to raise and their grown now,so I'm trying to find my back to me. I am doing the 75 Soft Challenge, which it challenges you to read any book 10 pages a day😢. The best about this is that I found my favorite childhood books in the Dollar Tree. Judy Blume, Are you there God, it's me Margaret my absolute favorite. So. I will be starting this journey and pray that I can get back into reading. Again blessings to that young man.😊

Someone asked how a person who can't read gets a driver license. Well, they cater to ones who can not read. My dad barely could read with a 6 grade education. This is not fake. Do you know how it feels not to know how to read in a world that requires reading. It's embarrassing and living in fear. Thank you for sharing your story. Your story needs to be told in schools and adult schools (GED).

This is why I love teaching English to people less fortunate here in small-town Colombia. The joy they get when they finally can read English and Speak and understand English is worth it all. Most English teachers here want to only teach the rich and famous who already have basic English and they get rich doing it. I earn the minimum wage here which is less than $400.00 US, and I still am able to buy groceries for families that are in need of so many things. That smile of understanding is worth more than money. Way to go young man. I will be showing this video to my students. I have a student who is 34 years old and cannot read and write in Spanish, however, she is learning to read and write in both Spanish and English and the joy she has in each class is so infectious.

This is an amazing story!!! Good for you, Oliver, and congratulations on writing your book! I hope to read it when it comes out. I taught myself how to read at the age of two, and all throughout school, my parents and teachers were very impressed that I learned to read so quickly! I even learned to memorize some of my favorite books as a child, and I still like to read while finishing college. When I'm not reading lengthy textbooks for my classes and on break, like I am right now, I like to read for pleasure and sometimes I like to re-read books by some of my favorite authors that I read during my childhood, my favorite books that I read in high school, middle school, and elementary school. I like to read novels, poetry, romance stories, Shakespeare plays, British romance novels, and books about history, some of my fav. role models, and my particular favorite genre, biographies and autobiographies about my favorite musicians and entertainers, because I like music so much. Keep up the reading, James! Now, you've made me want to go back and re-read Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, and some other favorites. I like to listen to audiobooks as well, especially with my father. So I guess you could say we have lots of favorite books in common. The world needs more people like you. Looking forward to your book! From your newest fan and reader fanatic, Dara
