This week we tackle our homestead "junk drawer" which is an area of the property that kind of got turned into our storage area, but sadly also got completely overgrown with invasive plants. We've lost a bunch of important building supplies in that jungle, and want to recover it for our next big LIVESTOCK project : ) In other news, our guided visualization program "Unwind" is officially out, you can take a look at www.wildweroam... to see if it's a good fit for you. It's been incredibly transformational for the two of us to use this program every night, and the responses we've gotten already are blowing us away! And if you'd like to dip your toe into the world of guided visualization first, there's a FREE shorter track called "Stress Melt" available on our website as well: www.wildweroam...
Big love,
Lou, Dana, Max & Freja

Hey, I'm a biologist from Slovenia, where we also have a huge problem with the Japanese Knotweed, as the little bastard can propagate from any remaining twig you leave. The only solution we found was working in Ljubljana on the Castle hill was, first cutting the plant and covering the whole area with black plastic covering(so that the light can not get through) for I think it was more than a year. If you ever want to use this area and don't want the weed to spread to your other areas. And just a p.s. I love the intro, it reminds me of your time or building and traveling in the van :D

You are taking a big risk cutting that. In ireland we are told to never cut knotweed. If its found on public land the local council puts up signs saying "Japanese Knotweed Do Not Cut" and they inject the plant with herbicide. I know weed killers are bad but it wouod be worse if it took hold and affected native plants. Not sure what happens on private land.

Hi there Dana, Lou & Max😍, loving seeing your journey, a little known help for Japanese Knotweed are blight susceptible potatoes!...they also deal with bindweed too, simply plant the blight susceptible potatoes in and around your Knotweed/bindweed at normal potato growing spacing & let them do their job!...I don't have the reference to hand but have used older heritage potatoes for this purpose on my allotment with great results, wherever there was a heritage potato, there was no bindweed! once you've weed wacked that knotweed get some blight susceptible potatoes & simply plant every few feet, don't worry too much about chitting them either.... there is something in the blight & potato that prevents Japanese Knotweed & regular bindweed from growing, & simply kills them deep in the earth at tiny root level, very similar to allium family or black walnut that puts out an inhibiting chemical that prevents other plants competing for food, worth a try for your Knotweed forest for a few spuds, you can still eat them afterwards so catch crop! Yeah 🎉💚..search organic non chemical options for them both, the references are out there! ..good luck with your homestead, hope you all have a good summer 🌤🌼🐝💚warmest greetings from a Yorkshire permaculture beekeeper in the uk 🇬🇧 💚🐝🌈🌼🌤

The snake at 2:41 is a Northern Ringneck snake. They are docile and not a threat to humans (they eat smaller prey like rodents, frogs, even other smaller snakes.) 3:48 looks like a Garter snake or a Rat snake (both also docile). I think there are some Rattlesnakes in your area so probably good to brush up on their IDs. All snakes are part of a healthy ecosystem, but definitely wouldn’t want to stumble upon a den of those guys accidentally!

Lou’s excitement is (always has been) so infectious! As for the storage containers - it’s SO hard to keep organized an ever-changing stockpile of supplies, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Tallow body scrub? You are all in, I love it! (Don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and place for a vegan diet/lifestyle, and I still love your last cookbook!) And yay chickens! A mobile coop is genius. My landlords (who so generously share eggs with me) just got some “Easter egg layers” and we can’t wait for them to get old enough to start laying fun-colored eggs! Please continue to share food updates :) It’s all part of your story. Thanks for sharing it with us!

As some have already stated, the snakes in the video are both harmless. The ringneck (Diadophis ssp.) is easily identified, the 2 snakes under the sheet looked to me first as Water Snakes (Nerodia ssp.), but it wouldn't match their basking behaviour according to my knowledge. I browsed through to comments to look up other thoughts, and I agree we your look-ups and other comments, it's def. some rat snakes (Phanterophis ssp.) Knowing where you are located made it also easier to narrow it down, since so many species look alike. - I'm from Austria, so I haven't had to opportunity wo meet them all in the wild, yet. Keep your eyes peeled for the 3 viper species, I worked with all of them in captive holdings, altough I doubt much will happen if you don't disturb them in the wild. Biggest chances I see to get bit, is by not being aware of your surroundings. Massasaugas (Sistrurus ssp.) tend to be more defensive then the others, but I only have a small stock of captive animals to compare, so not really sure how they compare in the wild. I wouldn't let Max play with hognose snakes as well, since he may have an allergic reaction and light swelling, if he should get bitten. Altough I recommend watching them If you find some, since they can be so "dramatic" when trying to play dead.

Totally understand how the shift in perspective can be challenging. We are moving towards a self-sufficient homestead and plan to have animals for meat (not just chickens for eggs), so if that is going to be challenging, we might not be the best fit anymore. Saying that all with love. here if you are interested but also no need to stay if our new life doesn't resonate ❤️ - Dana

The Native American who lived these lands before we brought big agricultural and industrialization lived in harmony with the land. Which means using all the resources available to the best of their ability, animals included, I have no doubt our friends will do the best they can. They are truly conscientious.

It is incredibly inspiring to see how far y’all have come. I remember watching your van build videos and more. Even the video where you sold the van. It made me tear up a little as I have done the same. I love the life y’all are creating for yourselves! Living a dream!! 🎉❤
