This E-Lecture discusses the period of Old English with its main phases: from the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons, via the constant invasions of the Vikings up to a detailed account of what happend in 1066. Thus, the E-Lecture is more or less socio-culturally oriented, rather than linguistic. It is meant as a general overview of the most important facts and figures of the Old English era.

What about the language spoken on the Isle of Man? (Manx language?) I thought it is Celtic as well. Other than that, I like your videos very much.

Is Manx not a modern celtic language or does it get grouped in with one of the others? Excellent videos by the way...

Manx is closely related to Scottish and Irish Gaelic.

Is this information also available in printed form? Or can you recommend a publication that deals with the consquences of the norman conquest on the English language?

Nice lecture. May I draw your attention to the Cornish and Breton flags, the Cornish a white cross on black (the cross of St Piran) and the Breton ermine(I think) in the canton of a black and white stripey field. Some folks get touchy about such things... ho hum

They can ... they might get touchy also that you call the language of the Kingdom of Kernow Cornish. The language is of course Kernowic.

4:22 it refers to Breton, and that's not a "continental celtic language"! Continental celtic languages are all extinct. Breton has been brought to France by migrants who came from Britain, it's then an "insular celtic language.
