Interesting to hear this legend had been self-critical of his early works, because I pretty much have that same problem right now. This is a stunning interview that really brings insight into how game music evolved. That "orchestra sickness" comment is so true; I always admired Ogura's works for being so different from most anything else out there.

The "orchestra sickness" portion of OGR's interview starts at 27:50. I put this timestamp here so I can visit back from time to time, to remind myself why I don't play much modern games anymore.

Darius Gaiden & G-Darius are some of my greatest artistic influences period, and that comes from the music first and foremost (though other elements fit beautifully with Ogura's core themes). They're still so powerful for me even today, in fact, that i've started learning both games for high scores (maybe even world records, down the line). Simply put, OGR is far and away my favorite game music composer - thank you so much for giving space to such a one-of-a-kind figure!
