As you said, Anna had to commit the act of true love herself, and that's because the love had to come from within her own heart in order to unfreeze it. Furthermore, I would argue that this act had to be for Elsa specifically, because Anna was losing her love for Elsa, who had struck her in her heart. Anna had to overcome this and prove that she still loved Elsa regardless.

Is it really the middle of the night, or are we only assuming it's the middle of the night based on the children's timeline of events? The kids might go to bed around 8pm, though Anna can't sleep so by 9pm she's like "You wanna build a snowman!?" meanwhile her parents are in the kitchen making sure the servants are properly doing the dishes when they hear a commotion in the great hall. We assume it's the middle of the night, but it's really only 10pm. Might also explain why Christoph is still awake at the side of the road with Sven instead of being passed out or sleeping somewhere.

@@eyesofthecervino3366 Anna was the one with the heart frozen by Elsa, so she was the one who had to commit the act of true love, which means that her heart (love) could overcome the spell. Furthermore, quite possibly she had to commit the act specifically for Elsa, who had (inadvertently) cursed her, implying that Anna was the only person who could have survived such a curse, and she had to really love Elsa, of course. Notice that after getting struck in the heart Anna kind of started to forget about Elsa, for once, and not care about her as much, if at all? That's because her heart was magically frozen, diminishing her love, and the only way to save herself was for her to prove that she still loved Elsa. As for the trolls, it wasn't necessarily communication problems, but the fact that they didn't know all of the details. That "true love's kiss" cliche was merely a suggestion--a guess at what the prophecy meant, and of course it turned out to be yet another red herring in a movie full of them. _Frozen_ is rather subversive in this way--it sets up people's expectations, like the stereotypical old-style Disney romance, and shoots them down. The true love's kiss was just another example of this--the trolls, who didn't know better themselves, set the audience up, 99% of the audience was fooled because they've seen this sort of thing a million times before, and _Frozen_ threw another subversive twist at us. Surprise! It was Anna who had to commit the act of true love, it was for her sister (not a romantic partner), and true love is not limited to romance (never was, but it's what people normally expect from movies, including Disney animated features). By the way, another implication is that a kiss from Kristoff, no matter how heartfelt, would not have saved Anna. It doesn't really matter, however, because what matters is that Anna believed it would have saved her at the time, which effectively preserves the stakes involved in Anna's mind, and proves how much Anna loves Elsa--Anna truly believed (like the vast majority of the audience) that the kiss would save her, so she knowingly sacrificed her life for Elsa, and we can see it on her face, perfectly expressed in animation.
