Times were crazy back then. Aztecs cutting out hearts, European crucifixions, Mongolian invasions, Chinese invent the gun. Like dang. Did people hate each other that badly back then? haha I mean I guess it's no different today, but at least it's slightly more humane due to rules of engagement.

couple of reasons. 1. Someone stealing had a much bigger impact than today, stealing someone's food or tools could result in starvation or them being reduced to begging, which also would mean eventual starvation. There was little to no safety net. In the US today, we have so much that the homeless have an obesity problem. 2. For a large chunk of ancient history, might made right, and if you were at the top, you wanted to maintain order so you would stay at the top, new things and chaos put you at risk. Example, lots of nobles in Europe had issues with the growth of the merchant middle class, who while not nobles, had more wealth than the nobles sometimes, especially when they pooled resources, and thus were used by Royalty as a counterbalance to noble's traditional powers. 3. Finally, remember there were no video games or tv, executions and public punishments were entertainment back in the day. They were object lessons on what not to do, and broke up the day-to-day grind.

***** Disney did not make this Warner Brothers did. They had their own channel on TV for a while and had this, the Animanicacs, Pinky and the Brain, and (I think) Tiny Toons.

About the "reduced sentence", was it mocking Lawyer (as in judge having more power) or Aztec's harsh law (like only merciful sentence was hard labor).

@98kemik After the Spanish arrived, they influenced many of the native Aztecs. They taught and forced them how to speak Spanish [European] and made them learn Christianity.

Holy Molly this makes the spanish way more reasonable in comparison, even the spanish inquisition in more than 400 years actually only excuted around 1500 to 2000 if I am not mistaken and you would have to either rebel or insult a noble (or normal examples of crime like robbery or murder) to get executed or be setenced to forced labour for life, they did not even have slavery. Not that it justifies the bad stuff of course they were pretty brutal in some aspects but dear God never like that. I am aware its overexagerated, but theres a reason many other tribal confederations allied with the europeans to bring them down, aztec law and specially warfare and religion was specially brutal. I have read more for myself after wathching this video and oh my Quetzalkoalt.
