I was based in and around London throughout my service and lived in England for years after I left the army. I now live in Scotland. My experience is many many Scots most of whom have never been to England have been conditioned to hate the english. Call it zenephobia, call it prejudice or call it ignorance but don't make the generalisation that 'We Scots' believe the English should freely celebrate being English.

Turn on the tv, their news reporters, actors anyone. What nationality are they. Their politicians? I think it was Dutch, the first stock exchange was founded in Amsterdam, the first multinational in the world was Dutch too, all at the start of the 17th century. English followed the Dutch in this. I used to work at a food factory and it was mostly polish but there was a Nigerian guy there who was a really good guy, loved Britain for the life it gave him and the opportunities we have, he was working for 9/10 pound a hour in a warehouse cleaning stuff, I respected that man more than most simply because he was more british than most british people I meet, had a thick Nigerian accent and still spoke clearer than 90% of people, I dont believe that 50 years ago this would have been praised but expected from anyone immigrating but now a days I'll say it for all of us, if you want to live here your more than welcome just put in the effort atleast to learn the language because that's the main thing that will put most off, the amount of times I've met foreigners (mainly slav) who cant speak english while working with english people is actually a joke, but to the original comment I appreciate you complimenting my home country because the last few years its been really popular to shame us
