You really should probably watch this more than once a week or you won't be done with it for years.

A very important aspect of the Schlieffen Plan was that it was an extremely detailed logistical operation. The german high command spend literally YEARS doing the planning. Once the mobilization began, there was no way to stop it, because there was a previse timetable from the first moment of mobilization to the projected defeat of France. At the same time, the german military feared the growing power of Russia and especially Moltke (the Chief of Staff) was convinced that by 1916, Germany could not beat Russia anymore, so a war begore 1916 would be preferable. War with Russia would mean war with France, so the Schlueffen Plan was tied to the russian situation. This was the military perspective. However, in the years before 1914, the german chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg had tried to maintain peace in Europe by cooperating with the British. He sucessfully contained the Balkan Wars (preventing an escalation into a european war) with the help of Lord Grey; Grey pressured the Russians to remain neutral and von Bethmann-Hollweg did the same with the Austrians. They could've done this in July of 1914 as well, but there was a crucial problem. In early 1914, von Bethman-Hollweg learned from a spy in London, that Grey was engaged in secret talks with the Russians about cooperation of their Navies in case of a war against Germany. When he asked Grey about these talks, Grey claimed that they didn't happen, so von Bethmann-Hollweg now knew that Grey had lied to him. The military talks themselves were not a big problem for the german navy, but the Chancellor now had no reliable partner anymore to ensure peace. Over the course of the next months, he became more and more desillusioned and passive, and Moltke's thoughts about the a growing russian threat and the Schlieffen Plan became the main strategy of the german government...

I suggest reacting to the prelude series as well from Great War channel which is a 3 part series. You should try and do that one before this honestly but ehh would be preferable but doesn’t matter.

Wouldn’t say that the Franco-Prussian War was luck based. The French had better equipment but Prussians has better tactics.

I would Highly highly highly recommend the Extra credits series: The seminal Tragedy as a compliment to the information on the outbreak of World War I. That series goes into great depth on the series of unforunate events and misunderstandings that contributed to the outbreak of WWI. Indy covers some of the same info in these opening weeks and in the prelude series but not in as much depth though his channel is by far the most detailed coverage of the war and life during the war to be found anywhere.

Context is everything here. I honestly don't think that this video alone can really cover all aspects of the beginning of WW1. Historians from all nations still debate over what really happened.

Your videos are awsome man just felt like saying. And hopefully we get a lot of ww1 stuff now. :) Btw if you could finish the Otto von Bismarck series that would be awesome.

10:08 To understand why the assassination of Jean Jaurès shocked more people than the Archduke, you need to understand that Jaurès was a very well-known figure in the European socialist movement. After his death, he became a figure of pacifism and humanism, kind of a socialist saint. Ironic considering the party hierarchy shut up and followed the call to the “Sacred Union” of all parties to support the war effort.

The problem with Germany was that they were throwing punches in a bar fight *when everyone has guns.....*
@melkor3496

I disagree Germany was using guns too it was its allies that were using fists and actually if Germany had competent allied things might have gone very different but Germany actually had to send soldiers to the austro Hungarian front as well to help them. Germany was performing extremely well throughout the war. Another way to put it is. Germany lv:100 player, Austria Hungary lv:40 player, Ottoman Empire lv: 40 player and Bulgaria lv: 30 player. VS British empire lv:100 player, France lv: 100 player, Russia lv:90 player, USA unlimited power, and then basically a ton more countries. Germany was carrying the central powers on its back in the war but it just wasn’t enough. This is just my short way of saying how it was it is ofc much more complicated than the basic way I put it.
