Is everyone ignoring the fact that the letter Washington sent Hamilton said, "Dear Alex, Come back, Lafayette is scary, and there's a war or something like that" ? Side note:(It was only like that when Washington was writing it, it said something different when Hamilton was reading it)

Daveed Diggs deserves SO MUCH credit and praise for his portrayal of Lafayette and Jefferson. His rap averages about ten words per second, and each paragraph is supposed to only take one breath. The fact that Daveed can do all of that and still enunciate his words, and do it again as Jefferson in Washington on Your Side shows how incredibly talented he is.

Lafayette only fought in 1 american revolution but 2 French ones (1789-99 and 1830). Sorry, Brady, he's still ours... well we can share him. Andd if he has a complicated place in our history it's because he had the National Guard shoot the fucking crowd, which seems a solid reason to love him but not revere him. Also about the military : Lafayette's great talent was to hide his troops so that they could take down the enemy while being safe, and make the enemy believe they were a much bigger force than they actually were. He started among the musketeers at 13 but had never seen action before, but his family had a reputation for battle bravery (his father was killed in battle when he was 2 I think)
@smolbluegoblin3 жыл бұрын

Lafayette is a local hero in my hometown of York, PA. He was instrumental in thwarting a plan by Brigadier General Thomas Conway to basically stage a coup against George Washington, at least in our local lore. According to legend, the Conway Cabal was to take place in General Horatio Gates' house in York, but during the evening Lafayette raised a toast to General Washington; the force of Lafayette's personality made everyone present join the toast, and Conway's support disappeared in that moment. (Thomas Paine also spent time in York during the Second Continental Congress; we were the first capital, after all. According to our local lore, of course. LOL). Thanks for your great work!

Listening to the Hamilton audio-book now. Dude it hurt me to go from this song, to hearing how his family was killed while he was locked up for years in Austria as a prisoner of war. Said he was in bad shape when he was released. "Within weeks, the prison surgeon found Lafayette to be “emaciated, feverish, congested and prematurely aged … near death.” Also Lafayette's kid was pissed that Washington wouldn't do anything about it. Well, that's just my dumb version of it.

Part of why Lafayette was thrown into military education and affairs so young (he was barely even a teen when he got his position in the musketeers) and of why Lafayette was a big diplomatic help to the US was just how LONG his family had been important to the French military. One of his ancestors actually fought as one of Joan of Arc's companions, and supposedly that ancestor could trace that heritage back to the early crusades. He was kind of a minor celebrity in France even before he left for America, and his journey to America actually made him even more dashing and popular back home because he technically did it against his (remaining) family's wishes while also technically smuggling a ton of arms into America. Like, the stuff he managed to pull of in order to get to the US the first time honestly should not have worked, but it did. Unfortunately, his reputation fell apart slightly before, during, and after Louis got beheaded. No one in France (or at least the higher circles of France) had a high opinion of him at the time, and it wasn't until the late 1980s that more than 50% of French people had a positive opinion of him.

I had a coworker who immigrated here from France. One day we are chatting and he says, "you know if it wasn't for France you wouldn't have your country?" I just looked at him and said "Franck, I am quite aware of General Lafayette, General Rochambeau, and the financial aid that Louis XVI sent." He looked utterly confused and said, "we had our revolution!" "Yeah, after we did." Furiously googling on his smartphone, then incredulously "Ours was after yours?" I told him that before he tried to out do me on US history he should really know his own first. Poor little Frenchman.

As a French person I do think Lafayette is very much associated to American history so we can definitely share him, haha! The main point I wanted to defend though, is Daveed Diggs' French accent. I honestly think it's quite legit and very close to what French people sound like when they make an effort to pronounce English words properly. Compared to many mainstream actors' take on the French accent, I reckon his is one of the best. Daveed Diggs plays a mean Lafayette :)

second gen American-born Middle Eastern immigrant here: for all intents and purposes Lafayette was an immigrant. just by the virtue of working in the US in the army alone. but also as it has endured timelessly, immigration documentation rarely convey the living conditions of a given immigrant. especially cz, tho, undocumented immigration is a potentially ephemeral and transient lifestyle, it still dictates one's livelihood while one's living it. claiming the US or renouncing France has 0 impact on whether he was an immigrant. he was. he just didn't have citizenship or an equivalent of a green card. essentially, he was a prototype visa holder.

I always thought the reason Lafayette wanted Hamilton back was because he was his friend? Didn't Hamilton do something similar when he was given the secretary position? The first thing he did was position his friends in places that could benefit them. If Hamilton did not fight in the war he won't be able to move up in class after the war. Lafayette just had his friend's back lol.
