The "Bastion Lueginsland" is a preserved until today fortress of the former city fortification on the northeastern edge of Augsburg city center.
Originally there was a tower from 1430 to observe the surrounding countryside. In the middle of the 16th century, the fortification was completed. After the abolition of the fortress property of Augsburg in 1866, the complex was partially preserved and has been renovated several times to the present. The building is listed as a monument in the Bavarian monument list. The name "Lueginsland" goes back to the word "lugen", which means "watching carefully".
The 71-stage "Schwedenstiege" (Sweden stairs) lies at the level of the Oblatterwalls, in the place of Kernstadt and Jakobervorstadt meet. It crosses the lower ditch there and maintains on the highest point several towers, the Sweden Wall and the "Stone Man". After the Swedes conquered the city in 1632 by a peaceful handover, they had a staircase built over the moat to create a better connection to the Jakobervorstadt and its surrounding walls.
The "Stone Man" (also popularly known as "Schtoinerne Ma") is a stone figure in honor of an urban hero who, according to a legend, during a siege confused the enemy with a trick.
The "Venetian Shell Fountain" takes its name from the shell shape that it forms. The Venetian wall fountain was built in Venice in the mid-16th century; it comes from the late Renaissance. The fountain comes from the Venetian square with the monument of Colleoni. Augsburg had excellent trade relations with Venice at its great time. Augsburg is often called "Little Venice" due to its many fountains and canals.
The purpose of the "Augsburg city moat" was the reinforcement of the city wall. It was a moat in front of the city wall, which was filled with water and offered the attackers an obstacle. Without overcoming the moat, attackers could not storm the city walls of Augsburg. While enemies were busy overcoming the moat, they provided an easy target for defenders on the city walls.
The "Oblatterwall" is a preserved until today bastion of the former city fortification on the northeastern edge of Augsburg city center. The construction of the bastion took place in 1444.
The "Fünfgrat tower" is a fortified tower in Augsburg. It was built in 1454, as part of the eastern city fortification of Augsburg around the Jakobervorstadt. He is now a listed building.
The "Heilig-Geist-Spital" (Hospital of the Holy Spirit) at the Red Gate in Augsburg was the oldest municipal institution for the care of the sick and old in the imperial city. The present renaissance four-wing complex with the irregular inner court was created 1623-1631 by Augsburg city master builder Elias Holl. Today it is no longer used as a hospital.
The "yard of the artisans" or also the "yard of the well master" is an Augsburg yard, which is named after the fountain master or the fountain master's house. Even the courtyard of artisans called. Nestled in the city wall, the historic water towers and the Heilig-Geist-Spital is the lower fountain master's house, an artisan house from the 18th century, which now houses the Swabian Museum of Crafts.
The "Water towers" in Augsburg are monuments of Augsburg's historic water industry. Among the several historically important water towers in Augsburg is the oldest water tower in Germany.
The "Herb Garden at the Red Gate" is a public Augsburg herb garden in the "Red Gate wall system". The herb garden at the Red Gate invites you to linger with flowers and herbal diversity. Typical spicy and tea herbs can be tasted here and picked for home use.
