Back then I was watching this comp on tv and never expected to see the local favorite Harting beat Kanter and Alekna in the dramatic way! This happened on the very next day Nerius had won the first gold for Germany, which is also incredible.

In the sport of track and field you just never know. I’ve seen world number one, guaranteed favorite for gold… foul out in preliminary rounds, false start, just have an off day. All of a sudden someone totally unexpected comes through and wins the top prize! Just look at men’s hammer- Pavel F. has been the favorite for Olympic gold in both London and Rio- and didn’t make it through qualifying! It’s what is so great about the sport.
