Being from Indy I have had the pleasure of knowing Doc foster and seeing his collection first hand. He has some beautiful cars. Hated to see him get rid of all of these but it was exciting to see them in the auction. He is a gem of a guy. I actually met him in the Jaguar club and then more in the corvette club…

Were there Corvette Indy pace cars prior to C4 or was that collection just “modern”?

I did a little digging on this… there is a great Wikipedia article on Indy Pace Cars that is worth a read (but can’t link here, unfortunately). The first Corvette Indy Pace Car was a C3 in 1978. Counting this year, there have been 19 total. Since 2002, when Chevrolet exclusively contracted with Indy 500 to provide pace cars, 15 out of the 21 have been Corvettes.

Don’t forget the NASCAR Corvette pace and festival car connection. I have a 1994 and all your old brickyard 400 festival car that drove AJ Foyt around pre-race. These are Corvette Blackbook cars! Only made 12 black ones!
