I know that road on the opening scene - Buckfastleigh through to Ashburton - if you want South Brent, it's the other way! ;-)

A right old mixture of images and footage, mainly 1963, 1979, and 2018.

I was living in Plymouth at that time, a young teenager of 13. The snow where I lived, between the Barbican & the Plym, started late on New Year's Eve. After all the sirens and hooters had rung in the new year, I popped outside and found a snowdrift had formed across the street, when an A35 van came slithering up the hill with a reasonable amount of speed and ploughed into the drift, and there it stayed for days. My sister & her husband were living on a houseboat on Hooe lake at the time, and when I stayed with them for the following weekend, the wind had picked up and the surface of the tidal lake froze, with sheets of ice like broken plate glass on the shore. My school didn't shut down as they do today and we sat in class huddled in our overcoats. I was slightly more fortunate than my classmates as my desk was alongside the only radiator in the room. However, this offered little comfort as it never got above barely lukewarm!

I found this video interesting and I enjoyed watching it. We have had particularly bad winters here in New York City and Upstate New York but this one must have been brutal. BTW I was the same age as you in 1962-63, thanks for the posting.

Before Dartmouth, I lived for 27 years in Sheffield. And if you want to know what snow is like, a visit might be appropriate. For some years before I left, 10 years ago, we had snow from december to february. This was compounded by the fact that west Sheffield is very hilly. and I lived 800 feet above sea level. Fortunately not once did I fail either to get to work in the City but crucially also home. No one else did in my road. mostly because I had 4 wheel drive and snow socks. I still have that 4 wheel drive car and the socks, but since I moved, we have had proper snow only once in 10 years and so it's a bit of a waste of time. But when I drove to the shops, I saw 3 vehicles in 2 miles, two of which were tractors. I think everybody down here took fright at the first sighting of snow.

The modern day blizzard was in 2018 i think. The Slapton line was closed, and we had to come the back way, and go home the back way to Stokenham! I don't think we even got down to the village pub on the first day! I could be wrong with the dates!
