After receiving 13.4 inches of rain in less than 5 days, the flooding has finally ceased at the farm. As the floodwaters recede, the full extent of the damage is becoming evident. In today's video, I document the immediate aftermath and revisit these locations three days later, as water levels begin to diminish. I also assess several of our fields, making management decisions for the next steps. This catastrophic flooding has significantly impacted Eastern South Dakota, Northern Iowa, and Southern Minnesota.

Matthias, aka HiTech Farmer, is a 5th generation family farmer from Southwest Minnesota who promotes agriculture by capturing it through the lens of a camera, one video at a time. Passionate about emerging farm technologies and the benefits of 21st-century precision agriculture tools, such as farm equipment, GPS, and autonomous tractors, Matthias is determined to bring new methods into his operation. These methods can improve his farm's efficiency and sustainability into the future. Learning from his parents' (Mike and Dawn) work ethic, Matthias sees every day as an opportunity to educate and entertain about the daily triumphs and challenges his farm faces, whether technology-related or not. His mission is to share his enthusiasm and knowledge of agriculture as he embarks on what it means to be a farmer in the modern era.

Thanks for keeping your channel current. Other farm channels that I follow in Minnesota and South Dakota are so far behind it has not rained there yet. It is nice to see in real time how bad things really are and how things move forward from here. Hopefully the worst is now behind you.

One inch of rain: According to the U.S. Geological Survey, one inch of rain equals 27,154 gallons of water per acre. One gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds.

Hi Matthias! Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the storms. Such a shame for everyone affected by the heavy rains. Hope you can get back in the fields and get some replanting done and you don't have any more bad luck. Love the Super M, sounds great! Stay safe and healthy Mattias, thanks for the video and really appreciate you posting close to when it was recorded and telling us when you recorded it!

Thanks for the comment! We may get back to replanting this week, otherwise we'll still try when it does dry out, but the soybeans likely won't grow harvestable beans. Have a good week!

Hi, @HiTech Farmer Do you have any advice or information for someone who want to create their own farm?
@HiTech_Farmer
@HiTech_Farmer Ай бұрын
As a 5th gen farmer, my advice would be to get experience. In today's economics I would recommend trying to work with a family member or neighbor who farms before going out and starting on your own. They will be able to teach you a TON and you can ask as many questions to them. If that's not an option, start small and be continually learning about what crops or vegetables you are looking to grow. Best of luck Nathan!

@HiTech_Farmer If I have a idea of what I want to do for the farm. To have dairy cows and chickens. What should my next steps be?
@HiTech_Farmer
@HiTech_Farmer Ай бұрын
First have a barn or pen to put them in. Next I'd start by searching online where you can buy baby chickens or pullets and start with just a few. Get feed and water and start raising your flock. Chickens are fairly cheap in comparison to dairy cows, so I'd start with them. A few years ago I used to have 12 laying hens.

Appreciate the follow up. Corn is VERY uneven. We have roughly 10-30% of fields we wont even harvest because there is no corn left standing. A lot of nitrogen was lost due to leaching and we are just starting to pollinate. The soybeans are really short this year because of the rains and cooler temps we had associated with the rain. Curious if you want a follow up video to see how they are progressing and look?

Something to see how much water still needs to come our way. And people blame tile for flooding. Looks like the tile isn’t taking a lot of water due to the fact the runoff has all the streams running above tile outlets.

rows of tile every 50' across the field tying into a larger diameter collector tile that takes the water to a creek. :)

@@MichaelHolloway When you tile 160 acres it's a lot of tile, and it costs a lot of money. Nowadays the tile is continuous perforated plastic pipe. In the old days it must have been baked clay pipe., hence the name tile.

Good point Cliff! 10 acres at 200 bushel corn is 2,000 bushels. Assume $4 a bushel and that's $8,000 lost just at the one field...

Of all the stupid and wasteful government programs... This might be a good time to pay farmers, if you must pay farmers, to keep low lying land in grass that must be rotationally grazed. It would be the country equivalent, of holding ponds they have in urban areas that in the case of a large rain, slow the flow of water into the sewer system; in the farm case it would slow the flow of water into creeks, streams and rivers.
