Very nice knife. It reminds me of the WWII USMC Ka-Bar, my Pop's had when he was a Marine, during WWII. My Pop's gave it to me when I was 16 years old; I'm 53, now... I lost it, hunting for Game Doves, when I was 17. I replaced it with a newer USMC Ka-Bar in the early 1990's. I keep it as an Collectable; it reminds me of the good times I had hunting with my Grandpa, Pop's, and other Family and Friends, when I was young... V ery cool, Bro... :)

Obviously, the blade blank were sold to diverse compagnies and made into the knife seen here. Similar model were used in WW2 . That particularités one was bought by my late fâcher in the mid '60.

The knife has a razor edge and I used to be able to throw that sucker and was most balanced knife It had a beautiful leather sheath which I butchered so I could hide it in my sneaker. My dad never spoke of the war so shit Its all PT109 to me. Well thanks for posting . You never know.

I can't find anything on a pal r/h 36 made by this maker and would like to know more.

i have the made in u.s.a. version. a few things you probably know by now is the r.h. stands for remington hunting pattern 36, i also have the u.s. marine ka-bar and a kabar 1237 there is no hyphen between ka and bar on that one

I had no Idea of the meaning of the letter, makes perfect sense considering the code in the number. the pattern the first number the length the second. So RH 36: Remington Hunting Blade pattern 3, 6 inch long. The other i reviewed is the RH24: Remington Hunting blade pattern 2, 4 inch long. Great Info, Thanks

Based on your information that the knife you have is stainless steel as well as how the pommel is affixed, I'd say with reasonable certainty that it is a knock off and most likely not related to the original PAL RH 36... That's not to say it isn't a great knife. Various examples of "one off" knock offs turn up from time to time. To be honest, I think most are likely made in Asia, most likely Japan at the time. In as much as the PAL name was a rip off, so might have been the Sheffield England name. The PAL RH 36 had a legendary reputation, as did Sheffield for knife making. So putting the two together on a single blade and selling it for around $3.00 would likely strike someone in a country where copyright laws weren't enforced as a no-brainer. My very best Machete is a US Military knock off that is Marked "Sheffeeld Steel", Made in Japan. (Note Sheffield is misspelled) I've used it, and still use it, since around 1973 and have cut down or defoliated many trees with it and still trim my hedges with it regularly. I think it cost about $3.00 too. Some of these "repros"/knock offs were produced in mass, some weren't. But as they were all intended to fly under the radar and not create patent or copyright infringement lawsuits until the manufacturers could move on to the next project, they didn't come with much legitimate information as to where they were made or by whom. For the most part these knock offs should be avoided, because most of them are absolute garbage. As they were made by shady companies that never put their real name on them... and then there are those like the one you have and my machete... Truly wonderful tools, made to the highest standards out of top quality materials... for no other reason than pride in workmanship... by people that for the most part never intended to take any credit or blame for their products... As history covers things in layers of dust and paper records get lost, it is going to get harder to find any more real information on your knife, although sooner or later, if there are enough examples found, someone is likely to make something up... Overall just enjoy the example you have... It's not likely to ever have any real historical value... but apparently it's a great knife and a tribute to the people that toiled in anonymity to make it.

Thanks for a lengthy comment. Yes, I partially agree with you on some point in today's market a 3$ item is highly likely a copy. But this knife was bought end of the 50 and 3 to 10 dollars were an expensive price. (salary were around 3 dollars a day maybe less. Since Canada was a British Dominion, lots of our finish product came from England and after the war they probably reuse the die to make new RH-36 knife in the new steel available. The bolt in the back of the pommel is characteristic of the era in many factory in Europe. Mainly those in Sheffield. Don't know if it has Historical value but It as a family value for shure. Always a pleasure to exchange on knife with knife lovers.

@@LtSurvival it looks real, when did knock off come into play? Which year?
@matrex909

Hi, I have the same knife, passed down. I was told it is not a knock off. As part of the war effort, the USA granted rights to manufacture certain things in England and elsewhere even before the USA entered the war. These Made in England knives were based on the USA provided pattern and distributed to soldiers from Commonwealth countries like Canada, Australia, India...
@RJ-vb7gh
@RJ-vb7gh 4 жыл бұрын
@@matrex909 The original RH 36 was technically issued to American servicemen. Rather it was sold to them through the PX system. Basically it was an "approved" knife for anyone who wanted one, but didn't need one according to the quartermaster. Basically if you got an bayonet, you likely didn't technically need a knife. But if you would rather also carry a knife, you bought the RH 36 at the PX and added it to your kit, without any superior officer fussing over it. The RH 36 was a small brother to the RH 37 which was styled after the Marine Combat knife (typically called the K-Bar) and big brother to the RH 35 (Navy Utility knife) As best as I know they were all put into service during WWII. Although the handle is reminiscent of the earlier Remington Hunting knives the blade shape and grind are pretty unique to the WWII series. Although most of PAL's records have been lost to history, I've never heard of any foreign manufacture contracts for any of their knives. Also as stainless steel was a rare comodity during and before WWII I only know of one military knife made in Stainless steel during the war and that was the "Jungle Knife" made by Ek that was only issued in the Pacific. The stainless RH 36's tend to turn up around the former British Empire. It's likely that they were produced after the war as they are in fact in stainless steel which became much more available after the war. Their exact origin is also a bit of a mystery, but most people tend to think that they were actually made in Japan as part of their burgeoning stainless steel industry after the war. Although I haven't seen one myself, I've heard they are of generally high quality. They are far rarer than the originals. As I've never heard of an original RH 36 being issued through the US military, (which is why they aren't stamped "US" or "Navy", "Army", or "Marines" ) there are no records of them ever being issued. If the Stainless variety was actually issued to someone by some military, there should be military purchase records or kit out records by whatever military that issued them. Those records should still exist. If you ever find any records of some military purchasing or issuing Stainless RH 36 knives during WWII, please let me know. It would be interesting to track the Stainless RH 36's to their actual place of origin after all of these years.

I have one of the original knives, carried by my uncle in World War 2. The Pal RH36 wasn't any sort of predecessor of the Kabar, it was a contemporary of it. The Kabar was Marine issue, and no one except the U S Marines were supposed to be allowed to carry one. The Pal is a slightly smaller knife, civilian purchase, that a lot of Army and Navy personnel carried. Some were eventually supplied under U S contract with a plastic bayonet type sheath and parkerized blade, All of the originals were carbon steel, not stainless, and the pommel was attached with a horizontal pin, not a nut. The knife shown in the video was probably assembled in Sheffield, England, using surplus parts sold by Pal after World War 2. The pommel nut was probably just a short cut in assembly.

I agree with you. The PAL from sheffield are probably surplus blank. No record are available on the net. One thing is shure they are of the same era as ka-bar.
