Historic Photo of State Street, Hartford, Connecticut c. 1900

This video presents a photograph of Hartford, CT that was taken c. 1900 and shows the buildings north of the Old State House along State Street (now State House Square). Except for the façade of the First National Bank, all of the buildings are gone today. In the video I talk about the buildings that were there and when they were torn down. They include the offices of the company that printed Hartford directories for 80 years, a hotel that was one the largest in the state, three banks, the onetime home of the Hartford Courant newspaper, and a restaurant/hotel owned by a highland games champion.
The photo is to early in 1900 to feature the Isle of Safety, which is now at the Connecticut Trolley Museum in East Windsor, CT:

Hi iam 55 years old and I born and raised in Hartford CT As I grow older I've been a lot more interested in the history of my home town I loved your segment on the lost buildings that once stood erected with boast of grandeur in which unfortunately today we can only reminisce or hear their stories through people as yourself I recently discovered the sad news concerning the old convent that still stands erected today but has been converted into affordable housing units which is surprising to me because this building stands in the threshold of Hartford and West Hartford I hope that you continue to bring more content in regards to the history of once a upon time in this great city we call Hartford Again thank you

Hi, Dan. At first I couldn't figure out where you were talking about on State St., as I didn't grow up in Hartford. When you mentioned the Honniss Oyster House, I recognized the area as I had eaten in the Honniss probably in the 1970's. Your videos are always informative. I've learned more about the city of Hartford since subscribing to your site. Thank you. One additional note: Some of my maternal ancestors go back to the early settling of Hartford in the 1600's.
