Very subtle, but impactful. The change doesn't jump out to me, but it just looks 'better' and that is very cool.

Another genius consultation, Brent, congratulations. Spot on changes to the pilasters, the door, the brackets and the hood, and the understated yet welcoming staircase that replaces the lumber store deck & stairs. I imagine the clients are lining up to book your consults. Thank you.

It is all in the small details that makes it look more aesthetic pleasing to the eye, The big problem nowadays is time is money , and people don’t realise how long it can take to have cutter profiles made up, which involves a very large cost, and you have to have a serious joinery machine shop facility to produce these type of mouldings,
@BrentHull6 ай бұрын
I agree however I don't think this necessarily needs custom profiles. You only need 8' of the column capital. It could be made with built up moldings.

Brent, you should have so many more subscribers! I love the way you analyze the problem, find a touchstone detail elsewhere on the exterior, then build up the solution step by step. For someone untrained like myself, you teach me to clearly see the problem - there is something wrong, what is it? Much appreciate your sharing your vast knowledge and experience 🇨🇦

This is a really charming house , The details on the original house are great and the new design looks like it has always been there.

Hi Brent, another great video. FYI the 36" high guardrail is required where the vertical is greater than 30". Section R312.1.1 of the 2021 IRC.

I would get around that with an historic house. Thx.

Looks great. The only thing I'd change would be to put two brackets over each pilaster, because only having one seems a bit light for the strength of the pilasters, almost like a really muscular man with a small head.

Italianate houses usually had very THIN (we're talking almost out-of-proportion thin) square chamfered posts set on bulky pedestals. I have seen some Italianates with those big paneled piers, but they are usually from a slightly earlier era than the house you're working on. Also, the proposed door looks to me just as cliche and early 2000's as the old one. I've seen late Victorian doors with narrow arched panels, but they're remarkably rare. They had a comeback some years ago and quickly became much more popular than they ever were to start with. I would actually do a double door with wider arched glass panels and a transom.

The fix looks nice. Interestingly, if you showed me the picture of that house I would never say Victorian prior to the fix. Is it primarily that you know the dates or the interiors? Or is there something in the exterior that communicates Victorian?
@marvinhaines92976 ай бұрын
I find it infuriating that people think "Victorian" is an architectural style. It literally means anything made in the Victorian Era. That's a long period of time - about 60 years, actually - and the architectural trends/styles practiced then were just as diverse as those practiced now. Italianate is a Victorian style - one of many. It was popular, in various evolving forms, from about 1860 to 1885.

The exterior tells the story. Brackets under the eave is tell.

Looks good but personally I am not fond of the bracket over the pillar, it looks contrived. I would lower the top of the capital to match the top of the transom and build everything up from there using the AIA detail paper as a muse for the whole entablature.
@marvinhaines92976 ай бұрын
You're trying to turn it into a Colonial Revival house. Italianate houses DELIBERATELY departed from the Classical system, and are admired for it. On an Italianate house, a bracketed porch is much more appropriate than a full entablature.
@bestbuilder1st6 ай бұрын
@@marvinhaines9297I think I am not trying to turn it into anything different than it is. I am trying to make it more like the front of the house (Look at the area above the front window and the treatment there). I also have no problem with brackets, I just think the one on the left above the pillar looks odd. Of course, you might see it differently.
