It looks like that 'tower' was still secured pretty deep, judging from that big block that got torn out of the ground. Makes you wonder how (stupidly) high the guy attached his winch-cable?

It's obviously not THAT darned secret! That dirt road is VERY well traveled. And who the heck are people to tell any of us what we can or can't say on social media? For those who want to know It happened in Saline Valley and it's named all over the internet! There is also a clothing optional warm springs somewhere out there in Saline Valley. I'm sure WH has been there, but I bet she wasn't allowed to say the name of it. And no, I'm not telling any big secret here. It's right on the National Parks Service website! Um, what? "dirt road is VERY well traveled... / No you can NOT drive any old car out there..." Both may be true, but not sure what you're meaning to say. When I drove the full length of it, from Bishop down to the field of Joshua Trees, you were often driving on stream beds. One person at the hot springs said he once ruined 4 tires driving into the valley. It's part of the National Park but it's not a maintained road. The hot springs are amazing though - I'd been told the best in the state, which is why I did the 3 hour long washboarded drive in a sedan. I was very lucky my tires held up. A storm in the middle of the night blew my tent across the valley though! While I was soaking with others.

I love that area of Death Valley because so few people can go there. I'm glad I was able to photograph that tower being it was destroyed. Another area I like was vandalized by off-roaders who drive in restricted area with impunity. It isn't just historical, but adds to the unique beauty of the area. Only self-centered people with no appreciation for the outdoors do this. The fines levied on the vandal will recoup the cost of repairs. They will pay for the restoration; not the government. @@rubiconadventurewithscotty3258 Legally it's not wilderness area. Wilderness areas are very specifically defined. Simply being undeveloped National Park (or BLM) does not make it wilderness. Wilderness areas are always at least a portion of a mile from the nearest parking area. Interesting fact. Taking any mechanical or motorized vehicle into a wilderness is a huge no no. Years ago rangers caught a guy with his jeep well beyond the boundary. They busted him and besides any fines he may have paid he was ordered bu the court to remove it via only muscle power. He had to dismantle the vehicle and carry it out. I don't know if was allowed to use mules or not but it was a long hard job for him to get it done.

Ok, I plan to ignore the hate, but this is how I feel. First, I am truly sick and tired of our government spending our money on things that do not make any difference to the majority of tax payers. Who among us knew about this and better yet, who among us has the means to get to that location? Why can't there be a sign explaining what happened there and maybe art showing what it originally looked like. That would save a bunch from that fund to be spent on graffiti repair on the sides of mountains that some of us might be able to see. In fact, I would argue that repairing the petroglyphs is far more important. And, to not let this man off the hook, lets have him out , beginning in September, cleaning national parks for a certain amount of time. Or if that isn't suitable, have the parks put it to a vote on their site. Yes, I realize this man did wrong by ignoring the signs. But he didn't murder anyone. He may not have the money to pay for everything that this restoration cost. And only a handful of people will see it. Put him to work. Put a sign out there. And fix what needs done for the majority of us.

First the government will have to convene a multi million dollar committee to discuss the proper way to restore the tower and this will take several yrs and multiple millions more money before a decision is reached because the committee members will have to siphon off their share of the funds before they leave a couple hundred $ to pay someone to shove the base back in the hole and reattach the tower to it. Because you know….we the taxpayers love to fund everything the government spends money on. Simple logic.

Since you're already up there, here's a hike you can take. Brent from Ghost Town Living is already up there. His backpack fell apart on the top of the mountain quite a while ago and he's counting on finding it to survive the hike. The video is called "4 Days Hiking California’s Most Brutal Mining Trail". I think he will be in need of a jug of water about now.

The bonehead had no business there in the first place. That’s why we can’t have nice things. If the genius had hooked his cable to the base of the tower instead of the upright, it probably would have stayed put. It’s called ‘leverage’. Guy should be fined

exactly. the numbnut didn't want to get on his knees to attach the winch line and attached it too high, then wasn't bright enough to watch the tower and stop pulling when it clearly wasn't going to work. experienced off-roader? i don't think so. probably an off-road poser with lots of shiny new gear but no clue how to use any of it.

Here in the Adirondack Mountains is the ghost town of Tahawus where my Grandparents lived which was a mining town and in 1963 there was a huge deposit of lead and titanium dioxide which was what was mined by the company that was found under the town. So, the town, what parts of it could be, were moved. The church and a few buildings were moved and everyone who lived there had to move out. In 1982 the company itself ceased operations. So from then on, people were sneaking into the buildings, taking photos, and until only a few years back, climbing in the abandoned houses that hadn't been lived in since 1963, which here with the rain and snow every year were in various states of collapse. So the state and the company finally tore down just about everything because of all the damage being done as well as the risk of someone getting hurt and where this town is, there isn't anything within 20 miles and in the mountains, no cell service or even a main road to get in or out. So stuff like this happens everywhere.

He confessed, my brother did something similar in the Midwest on DNR land he told them he was drunk and didn't know what he was doing, however that was 35 years ago. Maybe the guy should be tasked with the reconstruction help community service taking the comfort zone away for a time but not ones life.
