Opener Shafali Verma's record-breaking double century, paired with a formidable 292-run stand with Smriti Mandhana, laid the foundation for India’s massive score of 525 for 4 on the opening day of their one-off women's Test against South Africa on Friday. It was a day when records tumbled, with India surpassing the 89-year-old record for most runs scored in a single day by 94 runs. The previous record was held by the England women's team, who scored 431/2 against New Zealand at Lancaster Park, Christchurch in 1935. Shafali, aged 20, reached her double century in just 194 balls, breaking the record previously set by Australia’s Annabel Sutherland, who had achieved the milestone in 248 balls in a Test against South Africa in February. Shafali was eventually run out for 205 off 197 balls, surpassing her previous best in Tests, which was 96.
