Thank you for the tour. I’ve been doing a lot of reading from this period and have come to the conclusion that Grant may have been next to Washington and Lincoln the greatest American. As a General during the civil war. He defeated three rebel arms including their best generals Lee. As President if his policies had been maintained their would never had been any Jim Crow period which has shamed America for years. He routed the Klan during his Presidency but fell away when he left office. His final contribution is surprisingly letters. His self biography of him in the war is possible one of the best ever written. This was a truly a brilliant man. Interesting to see where the man lived. Thanks again.

@smizdeazy7 ай бұрын
To answer your odd question about whether Grant owned slaves. Grant was gifted a slave from Julia Dents father, as a wedding gift I believe. However, Grant himself didn’t approve of the institution and would take him to the courthouse, and pay for his manumission. This says a lot about Grant given the fact that he was pretty broke when he did this, and could have made money from selling the man. Read Grants memoirs for details

Grant inherited one slave from his father in law. The slaves name was William Jones, the year was 1858, within a years time. Grant declared Jones to be forever free.I do love the comments though as if while standing in the house of the man who saved the Union you tried to discredit him and his accomplishments looking for any reason to justify the rebellion of the south. "The War or Northern Aggression" maybe instead of buying a camera you should buy a book, a good one would be Grant's memoirs.
@HistorySeekers4 жыл бұрын
It’s funny because I was NOT trying to discredit him. Because we ask a simple question does not mean anything. I actually like Grant and being from the south that is saying something. Kelly is very much a northern girl and she feels that way about Forrest. Give it up the war was over a long time ago. There is one thing about us in the south, we do not care for rude people making assumptions. As for the city and that area, I actually said if I was to live up there that would be the one town that reminded me of the south. Steve if you ever find yourself down south at a relic show drop in and say hello. I usually have some of my volumes of books and cameras with us. Would be happy to talk to you about any of them in person. I find people to be much more easy going when not behind a keyboard.
@stevepoitras28024 жыл бұрын
Ok then I will apologize for the assumption. Having spent a great deal of time in the south from S.C. to Georgia to Florida and to Louisiana I admit to "triggers". The war of Northern Aggression being one and the constant attacks on Grant everything from being a hypocrite to a drunk to a butcher. I myself have been called a "carpet bagger" a lover of tyrants and have heard every lost cause argument there is too make. So I probably do pop off when those triggers hit. And no I am not fighting the war still but I am fighting the lies that have grown up around it. I thank you for your kind offer and if I'm ever around your way. I'll by you and Kelly dinner as a sincere apology.
@kellyhistoryseekers30904 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve!
@HistorySeekers4 жыл бұрын
Steve thank you for taking the time to reply. We must insist on buying. Thank you for watching our videos. Kelly and I don’t always see eye to eye on the war either. I am not a big fan of Sherman but i think Grant was a good General. As someone with strong confederate ties, I recognize after the war he was the reason many southern soldiers were not put on trial or their land taken which was something Andrew Johnson was for. While researching, I ran across an article printed in Jacksonville AL (if memory serves correctly) just after the war of southern soldiers praising grant for his efforts to put the war in the past and move forward. I actually called it to Kelly’s attention. I will look for that when I have time and post it in our History Seekers Facebook group or on the community section our channel. My favorite Generals of the war were Grant and Forrest. You should read up on Forrest.
@stevepoitras28024 жыл бұрын
@@HistorySeekers I will do that, over the years I have come to notice in y research that a lot of confederate soldiers had a deep respect for Grant. Many even writing to him when they found out he was dying. You should consider visiting and filming a trip to his tomb it is quite remarkable. I believe it is still the largest privately funded memorial in the country. I will take your advice and follow up on Forrest although I will probably need your advice on what to look for to read and research. What I have seen so far I believe comes with a bit of an unflattering bias. I personally have always been interested in Lee though like Grant believe his motives were misguided, but I feel Lee was a great general and commanded great respect and devotion from his men. I also have been interested and have done some research on both Johnston and Buckner who were pall bearers at Grant's funeral. As for Sherman...not one of my favorites although I was traveling with a friend of mine who was writing a book on soldiers of ND who marched with Sherman to the sea. His name was William T. Sherman as well, you should have seen the looks we got every time we presented our credentials at some research library lol. All to say I think Bedford and Sherman are both very tainted by their remarks and involvement with things after the war and thus are both judged in that light by today's standards. So again if you know of something that simply deals with Forrest as a commander and strategist I would be interested. I try to stay off facebook, too much garbage, same reason I avoid the news. So if you are comfortable let me know how to stay in touch I would welcome the opportunity to speak more about what I think is a fascinating period of American History.
@robertamcguffin34462 жыл бұрын
Folks, I know you're trying to keep to period for the wall paper and rugs, but there is such a thing as taste! I have never seen such ugly combinations. The Grant shades are tasteful, why weren't you guided by them? This is a relatively small house. Scale is important-such big prints!. If the bedcovers are original they could help also. To be historic you don't have to be ugly.
