I think of all the technology and scba we have available now.....these guys were animals, I had a neighbor growing up that was retired Chicago fd....he has been drug out of buildings several times unconscious they really put their lives and health on the line with every alarm. Respect to all of you old school smoke eaters.

8:13 That is a Sutphen aerial tower. The company out of Ohio. They are still around today and make a great fire apparatus.

The helmet facing backwards is to reflect the radiant heat. It has absolutely zero to do with being a rookie. If you notice several times in this video you see a firefighter with a white emblem on the front of his helmet (called a device”. That is one of the fire officers ( they wear white fonts) . I guarantee you the fire officer is no rookie and he has his helmet on backwards as well. It’s for keeping the heat away from the face and neck and that’s all it’s for.

Although you don’t specify it, the second segment with the tower truck has to be at least 1967 as shown by the 1967 or later Chevrolet pickup truck in the footage. (The fire unit might date it as well but I don’t know how to identify those.)

brings back memories - no was not Detroit- but was in the service starting in the 70's with a cotton duck coat, boots and a metal Senator helmet, next upgrade was a Philadephia Helmet-(first edition) with rivets (they split and had melting issues) then the cotton duck moved up to nomex coat. year by year an increase in safety- really hurt though when i could not ride on the back of truck though.. lots of good memories hanging on the bar clipping my coat on and watching people go by....

What's with the backwards helmets?
@DCAFlyBoy
@DCAFlyBoy 2 жыл бұрын
There are many stories behind it. I was told when they had their hats on backwards because they are the rookies. Therefore the veterans can keep their eyes on the rookies. Please tell your friends and family about the channel and tell them to subscribe, thumbs 👍 and smash the notification 🔔. Enjoy the spring weather and have a great day.

because they dont wear scba often, they turn their helmets around so the longer rear brim is used to protect their faces from heat,debris and other hazards

What’s up with the backward helmet?
@DCAFlyBoy
@DCAFlyBoy 3 жыл бұрын
I saw that too. Thats a good question 🤔. I believe when wearing it backwards, the back of the helmet has a extension. Longer over lap to keep the water off his face.
