The Columbus Historical Society recently launched a new event series called the Historical Dinner Club, showcasing beloved restaurants of Columbus's past that are still fondly remembered today. For this introductory event, Alana's Food & Wine reimagined the menu of The Kahiki, which closed its doors in 2000.
During this one-night-only event, patrons were able to relive the tropical Polynesian experience from what was once this city's premier tiki bar.

There are a few recipes from the Kahiki published in Kahiki Supper Club: A Polynesian Paradise by Doug Motz and David Meyers...my favorite being the Tahitian Mermaid...a butterflied tenderloin steak stuffed with crabmeat and cream cheese. It was the last meal I had at the restaurant before its untimely death. CURSE the Wallgreens that sits on its gravesite! Curse also the processed frozen food company using the good name Kahiki to peddle its crappy processed frozen food that is Kahiki in name only with no connection to the unique and quality food served in the restaurant. God rest its soul. Alav Ha-Sholom.

My very generous aunt Clara used to take me to this restaurant many many times. I was around 13 to 15 years old. I was a very creative kid and took in every detail of the experience. Later in life I became an architect and to this day, I feel that the restaurant had an impact on me. Now that I’m older, if I close my eyes, I can remember almost every detail as if I am building an architectural model in my head. I would happily be a part of reconstructing the next vision and interpretation of a new Kahiki. Those who had a hand in destroying it, should definitely play a major role in its reconstruction. Keep the idea alive. You never know when you plant a seed, what will become of it

People who used to work at the restaurant tried to reopen a restaurant using the same food and drinks in a run down out of the way strip mall in Hilliard called the Tropical Bistro. It closed within two years due to its terrible location and lack of advertising. The processed food company that still uses the name "Kahiki" cranks out crap that was never served in the restaurant and is unsuitable for eating.
