These ships were basically armored cruisers (at best rated as light 2nd class battleships) were NOT intended to dominate anything other than opposing cruisers or merchant ship raiding. Their armor was outdated but what was really their problem was that logistically they were poorly supported and this forced them into a corner in a fight they could not win. Poor quality coal and poor quality ammo for their ten 5.5 inch Hontoria quick fire guns (ten each per ship). Only belatedly did they received around 100 good quality rounds for ALL THREE ships that they had to share (30 rounds or so per ship). The Vizcaya's speed was tremendously reduced by biological fouling and could only do about 15 knots. It needed a dry docking and hull cleaning. Even the non-MT class Cristobal Colon despite have good quality British 6 inch guns, five on each side, had not yet received her fore and aft 10.5 cm guns so she had no forward or aft firepower, an her good coal ran out after a stern chase and she slowed to a speed that she could be caught by the Brooklyn armored cruiser and Oregon Battleship. Even the 18 knot USS Texas was in the hunt although it has been temporarily slowed by a maneuver of the Brooklyn earlier in the fight. Properly coaled and suppled the MT class cruisers were excellent blue water vessels for the defense of Spanish seas but not intended to fight in the line of battle with Battleships.

In addition to its poor quality of design and materials, not having been adequately prepared for the battle greatly influenced its performance as well, they could not stop the fires on board once they had started, their weapons were poorly calibrated, this would later be revealed, going out to face battleships that were waiting for them was more than a terrible decision on the part of the high command who knew that those cruisers would not survive the battle, I am aware that there was no chance for them, in fact I am working on a project to recreate said confrontation and show that however different the circumstances of the Spanish were, that battle was lost before it had started, thanks for the contribution to the channel, it is worth gold.

@@Vbertz The battle was lost since they purposely put the ships in a place where they could only leave one by one like ducks at a fair, besides the other officers thought Cervera's decisions were too strange for logistics, battle, etc. Let's remember that the USA at that time were not even close to what they were in the Second World War and was equal or inferior to the Spanish in many aspects. There were other battles in that war where U.S. ships were sunk with much less, it is very well to exalt with propaganda that the U.S. was great in sea battles at that time when it was not so, not even Spain used the submarine with torpedoes selling plans to England, etc. If that is not treason.

The entire campaign of the Spanish-American War was surely the price that the Spanish government paid to show that it had put up some resistance in order to try to hold on to territories that it had known for decades that it could not hold on to for much longer. Admiral Cervera himself, when he received the express order from the Spanish government to take his ships out of Santiago de Cuba to confront the American fleet, was fully aware that he, his ships and his men were part of this useless gesture of armed resistance. Even if he had had his fleet fully prepared, armed and ready, the terrible tactical inferiority of leaving one by one through the narrow bay of Santiago de Cuba with ships inferior in tonnage, armor and firepower, each of them facing alone the shots of the American fleet that shot them down as they left, would probably have been enough on its own to lose the battle. A sacrifice on the altar of nineteenth-century honor. Not to mention the land war on the island, with a garrison of more than 200,000 men who remained in barracks without moving, except for a few minor units that were charged with "staging" an act of armed resistance directed at the public opinion of Spain and Europe. Surrendering Cuba without a single shot would have been inconceivable, but having faced serious long-term resistance would have been worse in terms of human and, above all, economic costs that were impossible to bear at that time.

Cervera’s strategy in the Battle of Santiago failed by not using the destroyers first to harass and weaken the Americans, allowing the Vizcaya-class cruisers to face the battleships in direct combat, which they were not designed for. According to the theory of the “Jeune École,” their role was for quick attacks, not frontal engagements, exposing them to a more powerful enemy.
@Vbertz2 ай бұрын
I think the same, the ships left the bay at least 700 meters apart, giving the American force the opportunity to concentrate fire on the Infanta Maria Teresa, despite having torpedoes with a range of 800m they never used them, their weapons calibrated for 4000 shots were inefficient, I think the destroyers would have created the opportunity for the squadron to come out better, victory was difficult, almost impossible, but a more glorious battle could have been fought, thanks for the contribution to the channel.
@mz0pp42 ай бұрын
If Cervera had followed the advice of his chief of staff, Bustamante, and had left at night with the destroyers leading, the Spanish fleet would likely have had a better chance of escaping. This strategy would have allowed them to disorganize the American fleet and provided better concealment for the retreat. Leaving under the cover of darkness would have reduced visibility and enabled the ships to escape toward Havana, where he was actually ordered to go. This decision could have changed the outcome of the battle and preserved part of the Spanish fleet.
@Vbertz2 ай бұрын
@mz0pp4 Of course! The decisions made by the Spanish command were not adequate for the situation. Going out at night with ships mostly painted black would have helped to conceal them a lot. I am from Santiago, the exit from the Bay on a normal night is very dark, the mountains darken and look black and the shape of the bay itself would have helped in some way, but going out to fight during the day, in inferiority and with the plan they used, it seems that Cervera was sacrificing his squadron on purpose or that they were led by someone inexperienced.

You're right, I only focused the video mostly on the armament and armor leaving aside something very important like maneuverability and propulsion, "triple expansion" refers to a type of steam engine used in naval propulsion right. This ship uses an engine that in turn uses three stages of expansion to improve the efficiency of steam, which allowed ships of the time to reach higher speeds and consume less fuel. Although these ships did not introduce this improvement, they did benefit from it. Thank you very much for the contribution. It means a lot and helps improve the content, current and future.

Just how did this end design change naval history?
@Vbertz2 ай бұрын
According to the information I found on the subject, which was not much, these ships were the first armored cruisers built in Spain and were inspired by the British cruisers of the Orlando class. Their design included heavier armor and larger guns, which represented an advance in the naval technology of the time. Despite their tragic fate, their poor use and performance in battle, which was largely due to mechanical problems, and their poor construction materials due to cutbacks and low budgets at the time of their construction, despite all this, the ships of the Infanta María Teresa class represented a significant advance in Spanish naval technology of the time. Perhaps in the script I should have been more specific.
@vespelian2 ай бұрын
@@Vbertz Thanks for the response. I found the video very informative. Drachinfal did a Five Minute Minute Guide on the class a few years ago and this added a lot more. They were part of an experimental type of armoured cruiser with battleship grade guns popular in the early 1890's such as the three units built in France for Japan and fighting at the battle of Yalow. The type proved a dead end. Strangely enough I first heard about this ship in a book about cat stories my mother gave me as a child. About the Maria's ship's cat sticking with the wreck as the Americans tried to salvage her and the cat eventually being adopted by them. I don't know if the story has any veracity but it was very specific to Infanta Maria. I seem to remember the salvaged wreck coming to grief off Cat island in the Bahamas.

@Vbertz2 ай бұрын
Although the Infanta Maria Teresa class ships faced serious difficulties and were unable to hold out in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, it cannot be said that they were completely obsolete when launched. Designed with the technology and naval knowledge of the time, the ships faced superior naval forces and suffered serious damage under extremely challenging conditions during the battle. Naval technology was advancing rapidly in that period, and advances in designs and armaments often rendered newly built ships obsolete. They were not sunk during the actual battle, but were beached and abandoned by their crews after suffering severe damage. This occurred after the battle, and many of them were burned or sunk afterwards. It was a sad but inevitable outcome given the circumstances of the engagement and the superiority of the American fleet.

A ship looking like a rusty bucket directly pointed to a lack of discipline and bad seamanship. The "oil canning effect", inbound deformation of surfaces, are here shown nearly over the complete hull, but in reality they never occured on armored areas. The propellers are rotating backwards. It´s obvious that the videos creator has no clue what he´s talking about.

You talk about "badly designed and badly built ships" without giving a single data or argument to base your judgement on those warships.
