I had the same feelings about The Song of Achilles. Loved it but it was slow going at first. I loved The Scent of Burnt Flowers, I wish more people would read it. I really like magical realism and it just hit with me. I think it is better than most of the magical realism novels I've read that get more attention.

It’s so underrated! I also think that most people that love magical realism probably haven’t even discovered it. I gave it a pass because the story was just so captivating even though MR isn’t my fave.

Whew, I'm a little hurt that Sula isn't top of the top, but I respect your placements. A lot of really good ones here. I was surprised not to see The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois here.

The Scent of Burnt Flowers writing was so good, but I went into it, not knowing it was magical realism, and that messed it up for me. The story was so good it really didn't need it, and I think it made the overall story suffer. Because the magic part just didn't make a lot of sense to me. I had questions that still ain't been answered lol. It would have been better without it. I did not know Sugar had a part 2 I gotta go get that.

@ChocolateCoveredPages it was the ppl turning into animals for me. I said now wait, we part African too how come we can't do it?! And if it was just the Africans, couldn't none of them come over to America and gather these white folks!😂
