I am smiling and crying at the same time while watching this footage. I am smiling because Jewish life still exists all over the world and I am crying because unfortunately also antisemitism.. It is sad what many of those people have suffered after a few years.... May The God of Israel bless them and all jews all over the world. Kiss from an Italian Goj

Yup, this is Hungary. Apart from the Hungarian signs everywhere, I recognise the synagogue in Budapest - it still looks the same today. Virtually all the Jews outside of Budapest were murdered (around 450,000 of them), but around 150,000 in Budapest survived, including my wife's parents (but not their parents - they were deported and didn't survive).

It's located in Carpathian Ruthenia which was given to Czechoslovakia after WW1. In 1938, when Czechoslovakia was partitioned, the region was given to Hungary. After WW2, the region was taken by the USSR as part of the Ukrainian SSR. So, basically, the footage is from what is now Ukraine.

+Seno I think we can conclude then that the film was shot in Hungary before 1944, but after the WWII the area of Karpatukraine was really taken from Hungary and given to Sowietunion/Russia and later (in cca. 1990) became part of the newborn country, Ukraine. So at the time of filming this was definately Hungary, now this area is the most western part of Ukraine.

"in Ukraine", well, just for preciseness, based on the (Hungarian) signs and (most probably Hungarian) uniforms, some (or most?) of it was filmed on locations that before the war did not ever belong to Ukraine - they belonged to historical Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia and then again to Hungary, and only after the war to the Zakarpatska oblast' (Transcarpathian region) of Ukraine.

These lands were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But this ethnic lands of Ukraine.
@PaulLovesVarvara9 жыл бұрын
відлуння невідомого The city is Ungvar, now known as Uzhgorod. You can tell by the synagogue. These are obviously and historically Hungarian ethnic lands which were stolen by the Soviets and added to the Ukraine by Stalin. They have suffered years of forced Russianization and now Ukrainianzation. According to the 1910 census, the city had 16,919 inhabitants, of which 13,590 (80.3%) were Magyars, 1,219 (7.2%) Slovaks, 1,151 (6.8%) Germans, 641 (3.8%) Rusyns and 1.6% Czechs.[2] Ukrainians proper had no presence.
@СолопійЧеревичок9 жыл бұрын
PaulLovesVarvara I will not argue. Perhaps Uzhgorod founded Ugric Knyaz but there was a border between Galicia-Volhynia (Kievan Rus) and Hungary. Uzhgorod was the cause of fights between the two nations. Now it is Ukraine and arguing no sense
@PaulLovesVarvara9 жыл бұрын
відлуння невідомого Sigh. Uzhgorod was never the cause of fights between Hungary, and Ukraine. Ukrainians never formed any significant part of the population there. Ukrainians had other, more pressing, enemies (like Russians and Poles and Tatars); as did Hungarians. And the Carpathian mountains formed a nice natural barrier between the two people. Throughout all of its history until modern times, Uzhgorod has not been Ukrainian. It was only after WWII, when the Soviets annexed it that it became part of Ukraine for the first time. It was then forcibly populated with Russians and Ukrainians. Yes, Stalin ordered Ukrainians to move into the area, as he did with many other peoples. The only reason that it is part of Ukraine now is because of Stalin. I lived and worked in the Ukraine, in Rovno and surrounding areas, although I never made it to Uzhgorod. My wife is Ukrainian. But, I can still see the truth that these are non-Ukrainian lands stolen by Stalin. So, whenever Ukrainians complain that they had land stolen from them, they should then realize that they have lands stolen from others. Stalin was an asshole.
