@Thrand115 жыл бұрын
Before the battle lines joined and warriors engaged in hand to hand combat, they would attempt to thin the enemy ranks with ranged weapons. This would begin with archery, followed by an exchange of javelins and throwing axes prior to closing. The scholar Agathias recorded the use of angons by Frankish warriors at the Battle of Casilinum in 554: The poem recording the Battle of Maldon in Essex, England, in 991 AD, describes an encounter between the earl Byrhtnoth and a group of Norsemen in which an exchange of javelins is made before the warriors draw their swords and engage in close combat. There is a Viking age source by Saxons I have read it but it is elusive in this morn will look tomorrow for you.

The power and angle of those dane axe strikes makes me think a viable strategy would be continuous strikes to the shield arm to break the forearm or wrist

That is why I included the kanabo test reply to Deadliest Warrior. You can not injure the wrist or arm from a forceful blow the way it is held in the hand and away from the body. It is not strapped to the arm nor right up against it.

@@Thrand11 good morning man, thank you for replying. I found a book called "Fighting Championship Explosive Punch and Aggressive Defense" by a boxer Jack Dempsey, the book was published in the 50's I think. Now I'm aware that a couple of information on that book is outdated, but I don't know if it's the case with a particular one that I found particularly interesting, it's something he called "falling step" (chapter 7, page 10) he describes on page 14 as "it is a quick, convulsive and extremely awkward step. Yet, it's one of the most important steps of your fistic life" - so I've been practicing the falling step as Jack Dempsey said on the book. Well, I don't know much about fighting and stuff but I noticed that even being a feather-weight guy I felt my body accelerating really quick down and forward. After that I was back to your spear videos, watched it (specially the tutorial one) like crazy and as you demonstrate the motion of the spear is exactly the same motion we find on page 11 of Dempsey's book, on a illustration of a boy slinding down a hill on a sled. Now, if I think in a spear as an extension of the arm, maybe that falling step could be applied in a spear blow as well in a punch. And anyway, lots of that Dempsey's concepts, in fact, are present in your technique. I did that brief research crossing information between your technique and Dempsey's falling step, took some portions of the book and printscreens from your videos and saved it on a Word document. My thoughts are that maybe, if the falling step still valid as a fighting technique today, maybe ancient people could be aware of that and actually applying it on battle, delivering a powerful, devastating blow (if there was enough room to do the step motion) Also, it came to my mind that it could've been used in shield formations, specially the heavy ones like the roman scutum, for maybe a front-line of shield bash with the center boss or lower edge. Since the falling step concept is based on mass acceleration, a shield would be a lot of mass added to the final weight. My ideia is: if at the same time, an entire front-line of soldiers advance in a long, fast, powerful step, hitting the enemies, maybe driving them backwards and gaining terrain on the battlefield a little by little, whenever it's possible. As I have no proper equipment, any test I would conduct woudn't be as conclusive as it could. So I was thinking maybe you could put the falling step to the test for our great community here. What you think Thrand? If you want I can send you my brief research via e-mail on the weekend. (By the way: sorry if you already know about Dempsey's book and the falling step and I just explained all of that in vain - I think you do because it seems like you know a lot about fighting. Also sorry about many English mistakes, since it's not my first language.) Have a good day my friend! Hail Thegn Thrand!

How long do you have to put the hide on after applying the glue? Is it feasible to overpaint the design with dyed glue? Or come to think of it, would it be feasible to dye the hide after completion?
@Thrand115 жыл бұрын
Rawhide has to be washed with soap and warm water and rinsed. It has to be dried with towel then applied wet to shield over glue and pressed on take about 24 hours for glue to dry well a little longer for hide to dry out fully. Hide is applied right after washed rinsed scuffed slightly on back and not dripping wet but still wet. The second hide can be applied right after first 24 hours then 24 more let shield dry a bit more or just apply rimming right after does not matter but I wait a bit to let it dry before rimming normally. Casein glue or paint drys fast if not under wet hide could paint it right away too as well. Really could just do all processes back to back plus rimming then set in sun to dry faster after completed too. to make paint just mix half pigment and water drip or use a period ink and drip into glue as part of its water over all water content wile making it until right consistency. Hope information helps.

This principle holds true for arms as well as armor. Higher quality steel is both firm and flexible. If it's simply hard, then it accepts a load up to a point, and then it shatters, splinters, fragments, etc. A truly strong material both withstands and redistributes a load, so it has quite a lot of give before breakage.

Thank you for not trying to use a bow weight that is beyond your ability. There are too many videos of soo called experienced archers drawing bows that are clearly too heavy. If you need to majorly arch your back then it’s too heavy. The best weight is one that you can hold for up to 5 seconds after getting your final aim. Also I really prefer the smaller shield, even though I’m not a small chap I prefer smaller shields for the agility. Each to there own I guess

Excellent stuff. I guess the accounts of shields being split or broken were all hyperbole.

not all shields were made properly however. magnus labatøtes landslov states that a person would be fined if he did not make his shield properly, or shafted his axe or spears poorly. this was in the 13th century, so before this, quality could vary quite significantly within the different fylkings. this variance in quality is quite evident in the swords, where some swords had steel that rivals modern steel in quality, while other swords were made with either brittle steel with a very high slag content, meaning they would break or too soft steel, meaning they would bend. and there are definitely stories in the sagas of men frantically bending their swords back in shape in the middle of battle.

@@Dejawolfs I could not agree more so an impossible feat gets documented in the Saga shield split with one blow or helmet cleft killing the man but no one ever ask what type of puny weak shield was he carrying or why in the 9 worlds was his helmet such poor iron and unusually thin metals with probably poor or no strapping or padding.

You didn’t test the rim
@Thrand11 Жыл бұрын
I did test the rim in this video and there are two other videos testing one of my shield rims to the max. One on my channel and one on Joerge Sprave's slingshot channel he put it in vice and hit with grain harder than it could possibly been hit in an actual melee. The blade stuck in the shield the width of the blade he could not remove it was stuck.

What is that SCA nonsense of kneeling to fight? Good thing you're not allowed to just kick him over.

If you take a leg he must go to his knees or yield its based on Tourney fighting.

It's supposed to simulate a wounded limb. For exmpl: If your arm takes a substantial hit, you drop that weapon/shield to simulate lose of that arms usage. In the same way, if you take a hit to the leg, you would then take a knee to simulate serious muscle/leg damage.

...you made your shield to belong to the christian viking?
@Thrand115 жыл бұрын
The shield uses and old symbol Woden's Cross / Odin's Cross and the cross is not per say Christian. Its from the Odin Ring and even says Hail Odin in runes around it. Here is a link www.seiyaku.com/customs/crosses/woden.html
