Alexander and Hephaestion had one of the greatest love affairs in history. When Hephaestion died Alexander had a mental breakdown. This kind of love between men in ancient Greece was very common and was certainly nothing to be ashamed of. The book "Fire From Heaven", one of my favorites by Mary Renault is one of the best stories about Alexander ever written. I suggest reading "Fire from Heaven" and the sequel.."The Persian Boy" both by Mary Renault.

Alexander died a year after Hephaistion. Perhaps from a broken heart
@ArualMe8 ай бұрын
In fact not a year, but 6 months later. After Hephaistion death, Alexander started to drink huge amounts of wine; he was a heavy drinker before, but after H death he was out of control. He used to drink from a huge gold cup of 5 litres, with the legendary fur and head of Nemeea Lion on him (the lion was one of the 12 Hercules duties). The last Alexander aware night was at a party where he was drinking a lot of ice wine (very very cold) from that cup till his liver gave up. I am also sure that he was in huge grief after H death... Alexander was my childhood idol- one of the first books I read at 9 years old was Iskander - one of Alexander persian names- a great book that made me fall in love of ancient history and led me to read the next 2 books Illyada and Odissey- where I was amazed by another huge love and friendship between maybe one of the best warriors of all times Achilles and his Patroclus. Alexander personal life has some dedicated books, but his personality and military genius (his strategies used on battle fields are studied even today in Military Highschools) were so great as not even 1000 books could cover them. Alexander was a blonde blue eyes white skin beauty of medium height, meanwhile Hephaistion was a brown dark hair&skin blues eyes, taller than Alexander. Two totally different appearances but being one whole, one spirit, one heart and one of the deepest friendships I've ever read about.

My single greatest joy in having done ancient history as an undergrad is being able to answer people who ask me if Alexander the Great was Gay. I never would have imagined how valuable it is to tell people that history’s paragon of manly masculine accomplishment was just like all the other men of ancient greece: considered MORE masculine for sexual interest in men and third sex people as well as women, but his life's great love was his childhood sweetheart, a man whom he elevated to the plain of the gods so that Alexander would not have to be a deity alone. I learn pretty much everything I ever need to know about a person by their reaction to the story. If they're homophobes they then get treated to storytime about the Sacred Band of Thebes. Lol :D
@taviondavis12937 ай бұрын
Before anyone tries to say it isn't true, there's plenty of proof for historians to say they were lovers. Even then Aristotle's student called Alexander a "crazy boy lover" in his writings, which we still have very well preserved and dated copies of. The significance? Well Aristotle was one of Alexander's main educators throughout his life so Aristotle's student would have interacted with Alexander quite often.

More than sure the tall soldier represent another great Alexander friend called Cleitos. He was an incredible general in Alexanders father army and supported Alexander to reach Macedonian throne, after his father was murdered. He literally saved Alexanders life in the battle of Gaugamela. After a huge debate and scandal between Cleitos and Alexander about macedonians traditions being absorbed by persian influences and calling Alexander a destroyer of what a macedonian should be, Alexander who was very drunk (they both were) took a sword in a moment of lost of control and stabed Cleitos in stomach. Cleitos died in those moments causing Alexander a 2 days of deep pain, refusing food and staying near Cleitos body in mourning... Cleitos was in fact as a big brother for Alexander.

Their story is complex and understandably so, given the context they lived in. More often than not, Alex didn’t deserve Hephaestion and his absolute devotion. They grew up together and Hephaestion always remained loyalto Alexander, always by his side. Alexander’s ambitions grew as his power, their relationship strained but still there, the bond, and when Alex lost Hephaestion (partly because he wanted to keep going to India and didn’t want to stop despite his army being tired and everyone recommending him not to), he lost part of his own soul as well, ordering funeral rites worthy of a King for Hephaestion, building monuments in his name, and never going back to be the same. Just like Achilles and Patroclus, the pair they always compared themselves with, Achilles mourned over Hephaestion’s body for days. The great emperor died a year after his Patroclus. I have always felt a deep connection with Alexander, and have always felt like I should defend his love with Hephaestion existed. I believe I used to know them in a past life. I hope they are happy, in peace, in Elysium.

Remember the scene where Alexander screams in ordering everyone to get out of the room where Haphaestion lay dying. It is said that he spent all night weeping over the death of Haphaestion; that Alexander's men had to pry him loose from Haphaestion's dead body, so tightly did hold onto his childhood friend and the only person Alexander ever truly loved. Was Alexander gay? Our concept has no meaning in 300 bc. The question should be did they love one another and if so did their relationship impact history? Historians universally agree. Yes. Was their relationship sexual? Not really important historically, but my guess is yes in adolescence, no in adulthood. If they were intimate into adulthood, they would have kept it quiet, not because they were men, but due to their gap in status.

There's a lot of people talking about all the things Alexander did in his life, have been for centuries. Why does it bother you that some people, specifically queer people, also want to talk about this beautiful romance he probably had with this man and that historians have greatly ignored. Also, it makes him human. Us queer people like seeing ourselves in great historical figure and remind people we've always been there. Why does it bother you ?

Cause that's the part the media were all too eager to cover up and hide away due to their own hate and bigotry against relationships that weren't heterosexual in the past. Not hiding it anymore and being truthful about it is progress and a win people want to celebrate cause it took a lot of time and fight to get here.

Because we have said enough about the other aspects of his life while hiding some other parts?

There are hundreds of sources that suggest him of being just his friend but very few as his lover. Netflix just made that sh!t up.

It's a sacrilege that's what it is. As Greek this hits me to my core and it's an attack to my culture

My friend Ancient Greece and Rome very much had homosexual relationships talked about and less taboo then more modern times. There is are multiple examples of pottery from archaeological digs that even depicted gay sex acts on them. Those societies approached things a bit differently before later time periods.

Clearly you don't know much about the lifestyle of your ancients.

With all due respect, i don't think you're Greek.

@@emilyk6510 There are specific records of Alexander The Great that condemned actions like that and besides we Greeks always knew what Kind of Man Alexander The Great was and he was the greatest in all aspects, we Greeks have way more writings and records than what is actually translated and besides seek yourself and see, and see also that our own minister of culture condemned this series and complained to the netflix CEO
