This was interesting, I had not heard of (or remember, at least) Oldenburg, IN. My great grandfather's family was from the Duchy of Oldenburg. They came to the USA through the port of Baltimore in 1865 and settled in Covington, KY. Covington also was a mecca for German Catholics. There is still a church in Covington with "Mutter Gottes Kirche" carved, in stone, above the main entrance.

mike klaene It's in Ripley County, off the Batesville exit on I-74. Very neat little German village with plenty of German and Catholic imagery. Worth a trip to see it if you ever have the time. I grew up a few towns over, but my German teacher in high school was from there.

Question I have to the Town, is why the street sign name on what you show in the article isnt translated correctly, the sign shows Maulbeerfeigen Strasse which is Mulberry Figs Street not Sycamore Street.

Whenever an American talks about a German festival he shows a Bavarian act. Well Oldenburg or what the Americans know is from northern Germany and there is not Bavaria but the state of Lower Saxony! So it's a North German festival with Bavarian accessories? Because Bavaria is not Germany but only a small part of it and Oldenburg is North German from its immigrants! Not Bavarian!
