My grandma lived in Kansas during this time and she explains it so much more crazy. Animal life was effected in a drastic and strange way as well. She recalls when a massive storm of grasshoppers came toward the house and splattered on the glass, completely covering the glass with the remains of grasshoppers.
@readingthroughhistor5 жыл бұрын
That is true. We have a video on that as well, and the topic of grasshoppers is covered there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZW4gq19fsdklcU&index=5&list=PLU_3eMWMGreKxTadb8vVLWKlVGw7b7Pki

My Grandma bear grew up in Paris TX, I remember my her telling me these stories for growing up in the dust bowl when she was a child. One of my favorite stories was about the tumble weeds, she said that they would catch fire due to the static electricity from the wind blowing the dust, so you’d see balls of fire rolling across the fields then setting the tumble weeds caught on the fence lines on fire causing huge bonfires or when she would have to crawl home from the store on her hands and knees, and her having to stuff newspapers in the cracks of the floor and around the doors to minimize all the dust inside, all their cattle dying off from dust filling their lungs, man she had stories for days she passed away at the ripe age of 93 and she was as tough as she was sweet & loving in spite of how hard her life was, I loved her so much and miss her every day

Hello! I just want to ask if you’d be okay if I used part of your comment as a quote in a history project I’m doing on the dust bowl for school. I just want to use it to help describe some of the conditions of what life was like during the dust bowl. If you don’t reply by the end of Sunday or if you just would not like me to use it, then I won’t use it. But if your fine with it I’d love to use it!

On the West coast in the 1950s, where water was not generally a topic of concern for elementary school-aged children, we were told about The Dust Bowl, but the one thing I still recall is an older man coming into the classroom in overalls to explain what a 'devining rod' was. He also took the time to explain wood whittling and other appropriate areas of life in general in the states impacted. I always assumed the actor, Walter Brennan, was from OK. As the sharing of knowledge and documentation of 'bad times' continued into the 20th Century and all the progress made since that time, OK remains one of my favorite states, rich with history, quiet, humble and low-key.

If anyone's here from online school, hello. Here's a short summary of the Dust Bowl, what caused it and the impacts it had In the 1930s, there was an abundance of wind erosion throughout areas of North America, such as New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Western Kansas and Colorado. This was known as the Dust Bowl, and was caused by little rain and unusually high temperatures, but mainly poor agricultural/ farming practices, such as trees being cut down for growing space for wheat. The Dust Bowl affected on people's lives in many ways, including losing their livelihoods and their homes and soils being damaged, resulting lack of crops for people and farm animals. Hope that helped???

It wasn't all treed, but the grasses we're change to Ag. Today it is mush less, the stubble and roots are left in place due to air seeding, and alot is being cover cropped during off season, seems the Creator knew something when the field were to be given a rest too. Let's follow the Creators wisdom.
@Noone-rt6pw3 жыл бұрын
$1 an acre is inaccurate for modern times! A $1 then is a whole lot more in today's times. But it's a good reason to support The National Arbor Day Foundation, as well as taking the initiative to be a Johnny Appleseed where you plant a fruit or nut tree, better a pair of them. As they also clean the air.
@fredkeele65782 жыл бұрын
I believe the planting of trees is how so many Osage orange trees wound up in fence rows across the Midwest. Maybe? Anyone?
