If you look at a photograph and notice how clear and distinct the details are then that is an indication that the photographer used the silver plate photo method. Silver plate was very expensive so it was only used where the photographer knew he was going to be paid, such as for family photos. I have a book about the US navy at the turn of the century and the silver plate photos are amazing! The old nitrate film yellowed with age and also disintegrated or even burst into flame.
