Correction: In the video I made an mistake in saying that by the year 1800, as many as 40,000 slaves were brought to Puerto Rico.. It should be by the early to mid 1800s. In fact, the Royal census of Puerto Rico in 1834 established that the island's population included 42,000 enslaved Africans. Everything you said I agree with. I am Puerto Rican and I watch alot of videos from Africa especially Ghana. I now realize where we got our delicious food from. For example we call it Mofongo and they call it Fufu, their rice is called jollof ours is called yellow rice. They make stews which we call sancocho. They were the originators of the Pilon y Maceta. We need to give our African ancestors more credit for their contributions to Puerto Rican society.

Great video! My kids are P. Ricans - born there in the 1980s. It is disgusting to learn about slavery, but it really happened and it continues to this day, be it in Africa, even in the UK (where I am from) and I am sure other places too. A tip - if you go to Brussels, make sure to visit the Museum of Africa in Tervuren, a short bus ride out of town. Based around what was once the Belgian Congo (now Zaire), and encyclopedic display of costumes, musical instruments, artefacts, religious statues and absolutely everything. Well worth seeing! I wish that Puerto Rico had more documented history on the families and their origin to pinpoint a timeline of when the family or person had arrived on the island. But unfortunately it seems that many suffered from dyslexia. Whether that was through the Taino indigenous people, the Africans and even the Europeans, who did a poor job in documenting anything. I even heard of stories with parents not having their children registered in their municipalities with a birth certificate as far as 5-10 years later after the child was born making it more difficult to pinpoint the exact age for these individuals because for many children where born in their own homes and not in the hospital.

The Spanish did not participate in the slave trade from Africa. They bought slaves from other nations. In the Treaty of Utecht, the Spanish were forced to buy African slaves from the English for 30 years.
@coquireport Жыл бұрын
@valentinr.dominguez2892 Yeah they didn't get them directly from Africa but they bought slaves..In fact 22% of the African slaves in the Americas were bought by the Spanish..So they did participate..
@valentinr.dominguez2892 Жыл бұрын
@coquireport That is what I wrote. The Spanish did have slaves, but they were not involved in the trade. The Spanish did not go to Africa and then come back to the Americas with the slaves. The Portuguese were number one in the purchase and trade of African slaves and the English were second. It is interesting that there is no condemnation of the Portuguese and English for this. Only Spain gets picked on.
@valentinr.dominguez2892 Жыл бұрын
@coquireport It was often Africans who sold other Africans into slavery. Also, the indigenous people of the Americas had slaves. Slavery was common in that era, but that is never noted.

@@tedfebo1741 You are correct. I am not Puerto Rican. My biological father was a White Puerto Rican from Cayey, Puerto Rico. That was his ethnicity, not mine. I cannot state their race as will get knocked off for 24 hours. My ethnicity is Italuan American, and we did not eat rice and beans everyday. I know the history of PR, better than most people I grew up with in the Philly Barrio. Columbus did not start, nor promote slavery. Due to his stance against slavery, he was imprisoned for it. You are causing division among social classes and promote hate between the white puertorican descendant of Spaniars Portuguese and other Europeans, black , biracial people. I am sure that you do not wants create hate but maybe the owner of this channel only wants to teach the black roots of some Puerto Ricans. I appreciate the channel I learn from your video.

In one of them the Spaniard Governor of Puerto Rico sent a letter to the King os Spain pleading NOT to send Black Africans MUSLIMS slaves anymore, who at early time were coming from Mali, Guinea and Senegal because they tended to revolt!
