I practice meditation and have studied Buddhism as a lay person. I'm so happy you've decided to do this. I can't emphasis enough to everyone how much the Buddha actually uncovered about the human condition. Its not armchair philosophy, it actually is an applicable practice the Buddha discovered himself by choosing to find out what reality was directly via meditation and the cessation of the ego. His discovery of "no-self" has changed how I view the world for good. The fact that there is no solid or discernable "I / ego / self" within us, the fact what we consider to be "the self" is always changing and morphing, the fact that, when we look hard enough, that there is nothing worth clinging to in life - no external pleasure will last forever and we will forever be chasing more external pleasures to replace that desire we have for more and more - has made such an impact on me. One day I would like to stay in a monastery in Thailand or perhaps Nepal to try and at least attempt the path to nirvana. Please have a look at the book 'The Mind Illuminated' as a good guide. The author intertwines neuroscience and Buddhism as a guide to how one may reach true peace.

As a Buddhist i was so happy to see that someone had taken the time out of their life to give attention to something i see as important. Amazing. Over 2500 years ago, one man alone had all the answers. One guy, born a prince, and especially for his time period! He somehow realized the one true path to end suffering. He knew. And it's so simple! Number one, of the most importance- Do not harm or kill any sentient being. If it feels pain, it deserves mercy. Unconditional love and understanding, compassion and empathy for all beings capable of suffering. No sexual misconduct. Rightful thought and rightful speech. Never say anything that might cause harm. Allow unsettling thoughts to go in and right out. Live only in the present. I just wish more people would have caught on by now! The world could essentially be a utopia if we just let it be.

A little known quote from Buddha (The Sutra on Entry into the Womb) "Nanda, I do not extol the production of a new existence even a little bit. Nor do I extol the production of a new existence for even a moment. Why? The production of a new existence is suffering. For example, even a little bit of vomit stinks. In the same way Nanda, the production of a new existence, even a little bit, even for a moment, is suffering. Therefore Nanda, whatever comprises birth, namely, the arising of matter, it's subsistence, it's growth and it's emergence, the arising, subsistence, growth and emergence of feeling, conceptualisation, conditioning forces, and consciousness, all that is suffering. Subsistence is illness. Growth is old age and death. Therefore Nanda, what contentment is there for one who is in the mother's womb wishing for existence?"
