Tunji was a pioneer in the bringing of African drum music to the USA. His Drums of Passion album was dropped in 1959 and excited us youngsters. Tunji was based in NYC and taught all over the country. Dr Michael Babatunde Olatunji had a lasting influence on American music and culture.

I was lucky enough to take two classes from him at Omega Institute when I worked there, got to perform with him and remember him grabbing my hands during an instruction. I also got to respectfully tap Samba's djimbe as it was warming on the porch of the mass hall I worked at before a performance, and saw Baba and his whole ensamble many times before he passed playing with Carlos Santana and the Grateful Dead and by themselves. What a great man, and I miss him! He inspired so many American drummers and drum circles and I really feel the loss now, so many years later, when drummers in general have lost, or are too young, to have experienced these kind of roots.

Yes. I was Blessed to be in his presence many times in New York. He would come to the park where I took lessons with Baba Kunley. Marcus Garvey, formally know as. Mount Morris Park
