As a lesbian DC fan, whenever someone complains comics are getting "too gay" I argue they've been gay for more than 3 decades. Comics really appeal to the lgbtq audience because they deal with familiar themes: feeling like an outsider, being different, and facing discrimination. We are a very large and important part of the comic world.

DC been showing their care for diversity from day. Wonder woman's creation in 1940. First female superhero to get her own tv series in 1977 as well. Milestone comics , a whole subdivision of DC focused on showcasing and introducing new ethnic minority characters. This was where Dwayne McDuffie's creation Static Shock was born and he is still the only black superhero to have his own proper television series. Black panther was closer to a motion comic and anyway that came out afterwards and only had 10 episodes. Also Supergirl first female superhero film (1984) Birds of prey Tv series 2003. Both unsuccessful but they are other lesser known attempts by DC to spread diversity. Also Richie the second main character in Static Shock was homosexual. Gotham Girls web series. Birds of prey comic series was a thing long before the all-female xmen or the a-force. DC are always paving the way while Marvel do nothing but put out films that get too much money and everyone calls them the best. It's an injustice and I can't wait for it to be rectified in 2016 and past that date. #DCRULEZ

Sam Epic it's an okay video, but to be honest mainstream comics are yet to fully embrace sexual and other minorities. And it's a way for DC to tell us that they're pro-LGBTQ even when they have't been as strong as they try to tell us in this video. Like Batwoman's relationship was so poorly treated. The New 52 was running under this weird policy to not allow characters to get married so her fiancee was left in the cold as Batwoman was basically being raped ( having non consensual sex by way of hypnosis) by Nocturna. I'd say read other sources that analyse this issue instead of the company that's basically using this video as PR

I hope that all you guys complaining are just really young, because saying that you "don't want to see this stuff" is the same thing as saying that you don't want to see a certain race as superheroes. These characters aren't defined by their personalities, and if you think that there has to be a reason for making these heroes not straight then you do still have a problem with not being straight. In fact any comment that has "I don't have a problem with them, but..." is still homophobic whether you like it or not. You're just not used to having characters not be straight and that's the whole reason they're doing this, bc a lot of people are finally starting to accept other sexualities and by pushing out lgbt+ characters then people will take it as a normal thing, this is the same exact thing that happened when they started putting non-white characters in comics and they had the same comments made about them, so like it or not this is what should be done. I used to be the same way.
@SwobyJ9 жыл бұрын
Andre DRC At this point, in my opinion, the majority of those complaining about LGBT inclusion in media like this are either very young (and not really educated in most sexual matters; something they will outgrow soon) or rather old (Gen X or especially older). Gen X and especially Y have massively record breaking acceptance for LGBT and while you'll see some of them here complaining, I highly doubt that you'll see nearly as many of them do it as others, and to not the same level (boycotting, etc). The future will have Gen X, Y, Z, with most of each gen (except maybe not X) hugely accepting of this kind of thing, at least as long as they can still always easily acquire media that appeals to their own tastes (aka see straight characters in straight relationships). To clarify: currently Boomers = 50s-70s, Xers 30s-40s, Yers 10s-20s, Zers 1s-10s, so I'm saying that those in 10s-30s right now are the future, and the future is acceptance of LGBT.

Malcolm Swoboda yeah its kinda like how you can't change an elderly person's racist opinions. But hopefully these things become the norm with less resistance
@SwobyJ9 жыл бұрын
Andre DRC I am certain they will be the norm (not just majority support, but norm) in the West by the end of the 2020s. Trans may have more issues and debates surrounding them, and even current social liberals may find it hard to grapple with the concept of gender and sexual identification having a fluidity instead of absolute concreteness. But personally, I'm just biding my time for debates, decades from now, with my fellow Millennials, about the legitimacy of transHUMANS ;).
@andred44739 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Swoboda yeah, it kinda sucks though because all we can really do with the older people against this stuff is wait. And even though we're supportive of everything you mentioned, something will probably pop up while we're elderly people that we'll think is strange and it'll be similar to how all these issues are today unfortunately. I guess it's more proof that we need to focus on the future along with the people in it
@SwobyJ9 жыл бұрын
Andre DRC Well I see there's two solutions: 1)The normal one. Improve the world as you can, and wait for the oldest generational view to die. This is how progress has been in more recent centuries (and before that there just wasn't much interest in progress, period). 2)Technologies may happen in this century that keeps brain cells plentiful and healthy. This could hypothetically mean that people could live for at least several decades (as opposed to 2-3 decades) with a GROWING mind that FLEXES to new information. Imagine being 80 and being just as open to new concepts as when in your childhood! Scary brave new world, or an improved one? :) There is a logical, biological component to explain the slowing of cultural change. And it could one day be responded to. Already, the Internet has done a LOT.

Now, regarding the question of who's my favorite? I don't judge characters by their sexuality, but if I have to mention one: Scandal Savage is definitely my favorite. Nothing to do with her being lesbian, she's just a kickass antihero, and her backstory with his father, and the Secret Six (not the New 52's Secret Six; the pre-Flashpoint S6) was an awesome title that at times linked very well with the Birds of Prey title (again, pre-Flashpoint. I hate the new 52 version of the team; I miss Bertinelli and Zinda). But then again, this shouldn't really be a trend anymore. People shouldn't be overlooked or overestimated because of their sexuality. Not because a character is homosexual or bisexual is more badass than anyone else. I'm glad there are examples of LGBT characters, so people can relate reading them, but still. Rather read a good story that doesn't relay on focusing on the sexual orientation side, and more on the quality of the various elements within that story, while, sure, at the same time leaving little details to know about the personal likings or an individual or group of characters.

They left out Lightning Lass and Shrinking Violet from the Legion of Superheroes back in the 80's, who were never explicitly said to be a couple, but did everything two people in a committed monogamous relationship are supposed to do, like share a bed, hold hands, and visit each other's families.

Can we please get over Midnighter being gay? Shouting from the rooftops that he's a gay character isn't going to normalise LGBT. DC wants people to see that he's more than a gay character, but it's all that they seem to talk about
@TheCryZero9 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY and thats what i hate. Gay people are nothing "special "anymore, you dont have to highlight them every damn time. I feel like not only dc but the whope world reduces gay people to their sexuality.
@dynamicpenguin559 жыл бұрын
bianian8 I don't know if you're trying to start an internet fight or anything, but if you are, please don't, it's not worth it. That being said if you actually believe that, why? Homosexuality is, by definition, normal because the LGBT community is becoming so large.
@robertjones54419 жыл бұрын
I guess it's a way to market him; get as many LGBT people to buy him as possible, because he's similar to Batman so most people just get Batman instead so they had to find a different angle to market him

Wow! I never knew DC had so many LGBT characters. Though I'm slightly more of a Marvel fan (only because I love the X-men), I'm taken aback by how much more progressive DC seems in this regard. I thought Marvel was doing something by having: Northstar get married to his BF, Daken being bi, Anole being gay, & TEEN Iceman being revealed as gay. Now I see how far behind they are in comparison to DC. I've always thought Marvel was more progressive with their allegory with mutants being hated & feared for being different. But DC just comes out & tackles the issues & has stories centered around it. Good job DC.

If the characters sexuality doesn't further their character development, then it shouldn't even be mentioned. My point is, most of these characters came out as gay for noting more then shock value.
@JokerFan-qv8wn9 жыл бұрын
TheCelticTiger32 Great, so we should get rid of all of those horrible straight romantic subplots! If the romance doesn't further character development, they shouldn't get together at all! I am so sick of hetero romance all over every form of media, so I am glad you agree we should drop all that.
@SwobyJ9 жыл бұрын
TheCelticTiger32 To be a bit fair here, I think that sometimes the 'manipulation' (aka marketing) happens because it is meant to counteract the possible loss in sales from people who will automatically reject buying the media on the basis of there being any LGBT content. A 'lets get everyone we can based on this if we're really going to get into this subject matter' approach. Not ideal, but very capitalistic if my theory is true.
@JokerFan-qv8wn9 жыл бұрын
TheCelticTiger32 I do of agree with you that romance in general should only be involved if it furthers the story, but gosh am I so desperate for representation that I will buy a comic as soon as I hear there's a gay character. And Malcolm Swoboda I think you are spot on.

@chibigrl168 жыл бұрын
+Drake pendragon except yeah they actually did. Batwoman was a consistent top 20 best selling series. W. Haden Blackman and JH Williams III quit the series because DC Comics refused to allow the characters to get married, among other things because DC Comics has an editorial mandate that says "superheroes can't get married or have happy personal lives." Dan Didio freely admitted this. Outraged fans left when the writing team quit and the series never recovered from the scandal. it's called "Google" learn about it.
@trans80108 жыл бұрын
+Drake pendragon Sales for Superman were in steady decline since his return from the dead in 1993. The marriage finally happened to boost sales, that and to coincide with the television wedding in Lois and Clark, which happened on the same week days apart. The show aired on Sunday Oct. the 6th and the comic was issued on the 9th. It sold 200,000 copies and was the highest selling comic of that month in 1996. Weddings have been known to boost sales on sagging books or give record numbers to popular sellers like the marriage of Jean Grey and Scott Summers in 1993. Look at other books like Astonishing X-Men 50 which prior to the issue's historic and well publicized wedding, was suffering in the mid 80's every month, while not a top 5 or 10 or 20 seller, the book peaked just outside the top 25, placed at 27 with the wedding issue. The book sold outstandingly well that month. Didio exorcised marriage from the DCU not because of sales drops but because he wants there to be no growth with these characters. The New 52 de aged these characters for a reason, because DC felt no younger readers wanted to read about a 40 something Batman or Superman with history and legacies left in their wake, so they took 10-15 years off them, to make them edgy and cool and marriage was long felt to make characters unrelatable and uncool. So it was decided that marriage doesn't exist in the DCU and every married character got divorced or had retcons done. It had an adverse affect and books with strong relationships that sold decent or well enough now suffered as a result.

@Yuloforce9 жыл бұрын
4:36 also conveniently doesn't mention that the writers of Batwoman were originally forbidden from allowing her to get married. Plus, Alan Scott's boyfriend was killed off mere pages after he was introduced. DC has a terrible track record for representation, so this video feels more like empty lip service than anything else.

If Alan Scott's boyfriend hadnt died he wouldnt have become the Green Lantern, so there would be no comic

Decklin Wall DC would never allow their characters to get married. Except for Superman, Aquaman, the Flash (Both Barry AND Wally), the Hawks, Elongated Man, and pretty much all of the JSA. When DC claimed that none of their characters would get married, I just shook my head.
