History of Logging in Northern Wisconsin, 1882-1935

President of the Bayfield County Historical Association Lester Watters provides an overview on the history of logging in northern Wisconsin, using a variety of photos and stories to get a first hand perspective of what logging was like in the northwoods in the late 19th and early 20th century here in Wisconsin.

I think the pic of the fallers with the wedged tree are making their back (felling) cut after having made the face cut on the other side. The buckers in the other photo could've completed the cut by underbucking it. There were a variety of techniques used by hand loggers to deal with binds and tensions.

My great uncle was killed in a logging incident in 1925. He was with a crew in Langlade County. They felled a tree and the vibration of the cut tree, caused a dead tree nearby to fall, which hit Uncle Wenzel and cut a major aftery in his arm and he bled out.
