Samba is an Afro-Brazilian traditional dance, straight from Brazil. It was originated in Salvador Bahia, where I'm from. The first regional form of Samba, it was Samba (?) Jihada, that was later brought into Rio de Janeiro. Samba (?) Jihada, it was just an informal dance, and it such the way of the slaves celebrating life after a long labor day of work.
It was pretty much their way of dance informally, after the (?) Capoeira, the Capoeira circle, and after a Condomble ritual, the Afro-Brazilian religion, Condomble. You were dancing in a circle, and once it's time for you to invite the next person to come in, it happens through a belly bump called umbigada. And then she knows that it's her turn to come into the circle, and dance.
Samba for us in Brazil, it's our official music, but it's not only a music and dance, it's more than that. Samba, it's in every corner in Brazil, that's where we know, that's been musically what will happen, until it will be the time to go to sleep, that's going to be in every State. It doesn't matter if it's not south, east, west, it doesn't matter. It's going to be everywhere.
It's much more than that. There is a relationship. Most of the Samba schools and the Samba bands in Bahia and Salvador and Rio, they have a strong relationship with the community, and they usually come from a Favela, which is usually a poor community. So, it's more than music, it's more than rhythm, it's culture. It's a relationship of love between the Favela, the community, and the Samba school and the Samba band. It's really beautiful to see.
Samba more than anything is a social dance, and you're going to see it everywhere in Brazil. Today, in this series of videos, we're going to learn a little bit about it.
